Title: Those Who Believe in His Name
Text: Isaiah 61:1-3, John 1:9-14
‘Faith is the eye that sees the Lord. A hand that clings to the Lord. It is the power to possess the Lord’ (Woodbrich). Memorize verses from the entire Bible. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). The expression “world” includes ourselves. So we can apply this way and confess with our mouths (Romans 10:10). ‘Through God’s amazing love, <I> was able to escape from destruction and gain eternal life.’ All because of God’s amazing love. ‘Eternal life’ is more than the future completion of everything we hoped for on earth, and it is to experience a present relationship with God. So the knowledge and faith gained through this amazing heavenly love are not ‘nouns’, but ‘verbs’ from beginning to end.
This is one verse of the high priestly prayer of Jesus. “Eternal life is to know the only true God and Jesus Christ whom you have sent” (John 17:3). God revealed through Jesus Christ is eternally true and immutable. That love, that grace, is also eternal and unchanging. Our role in salvation and eternal life is a response to this love of God. Faith in this love is the entrance to eternal life. Unbelief in this love is hell. “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, and whoever does not obey the Son will not see eternal life, but the wrath of God remains on him” (John 3:36). Our attitude is not excluded from God's eternal life. This is because God's consideration for our free will is His love for us.
Today's New Testament text (John 1:9-14) describes the activeness of the Father's love to visit and redeem the world. How we respond to God's love revealed in history is an important variable. ‘Do you believe it? Do you not believe it?' It leaves only room for acceptance and rejection of the grace of salvation that God gives us. He did not let anything else stand in the way of salvation. Our shortcomings and shortcomings do not matter. Our failures and crimes do not matter. This is because the work of the Redeemer, who came to this earth in the flesh, is in charge of all these things (Isaiah 53:4-6; 61:1-3). Only unbelief in this wonderful love of God is a problem. The problem is whether we have faith in God's love as shown in Jesus' incarnation and redemption.
