Title: Three Kinds of Humans
Text: Genesis 9:18-29
What kind of person do we want our children to be? What kind of person do you want to be? What kind of person does God want us to be? The life of faith is when we become a kind of human being and live in the presence of God and people. In today's text we see three kinds of people.
1. The first is a person named “Noah”. According to Genesis 6:9, Noah was a righteous man and a perfect man in his day who walked with God. According to Genesis 6:8, Noah found favor with God. So, when God judged the world, only Noah and his family were kept alive to continue human history. After the judgment of the flood was over, Noah drank too much wine and became unconscious. He took off his clothes, laid out all his shameful parts, and fell asleep on a large chair. Why did Noah, “the righteous” and “perfect man,” get drunk? People who worry about the times, people who worry about the sins of their neighbors, people who worry about injustice, people who miss their neighbors who have died after being judged, people who are suffering under the heavy sense of duty to continue history as survivors. Was Noah drunk because of his sense of duty and longing for his lost neighbor?
2. Noah's second son Canaan is the second kind of man. Seeing his father's shameful appearance, he informed the two brothers about it. Canaan was a human being who had never participated in the agony and pain of his father, who suffered in the face of the problems of the times, groaned in front of the mission of history, and struggled with longing for his lost neighbor. Rather, seeing his father's shameful appearance, he flirted with other people as if he had something to watch. He is a person who understands the feelings of his neighbors who are in pain and suffers, and rather than participating in and covering the pain, he rather sprinkles salt on the wounds and likes to trample them. Such a person is always talking about justice.
3. Noah's two other sons, Shem and Japheth, are the third. When they heard about his father from Canaan, they covered his father's shameful part. In these two sons who try to understand and cover him before accusing and slandering him, we see a human image of understanding, forgiveness, and warmth. Father Noah woke up from wine, cursed Canaan, and blessed his two other sons. Where do blessings come from? Aren't blessings coming from forgiveness, warmth, understanding, and embrace?
Noah's two sons clearly show the cold image of a human being who pinches, criticizes, and tramples on the wounds like "You've caught well", and the warm image of a person who covers and embraces them.
What kind of humans are we? What kind of person do we want our children to be? What kind of people are the churches? Isn't the church the gathering place of those who are concerned about the times and those who have been forgiven by God for their unforgivable sins with warm love? So we are worried but happy. The church is a place where these happy people gather to share happiness with each other and to the world. I pray that Namsan Church will become such a church.
