To carry out God's will (Matthew 26:36-46)
1. Background of the text Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane
(1) The end of Jesus was the way of the cross (Matthew 26:1-35).
(2) With this kind of Peter, John, and James, Jesus went up to the Garden of Gethsemane, where he usually prayed. And Jesus tried to pray. He was very troubled and asked his disciples to pray (verse 38).
2. What was the content of Jesus' prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane?
(1) If it is possible (verse 39). When we come before the throne of God with specific prayer topics, the Spirit of God is poured out there.
(2) Not my will, but your will (verses 39, 42). By praying to accomplish God's will, Jesus gained the courage to take up the cross proudly.
3. To carry out God's will
(1) We must pray in the spirit of the cross (Luke 22:43-44).
Although Jesus Christ offered himself up to God to be crucified, God the Father first received the tears of prayer shed in the Garden of Gethsemane before receiving the blood of his Son shed on the cross.
(2) We must bear it with the power of the blood of Jesus (Ephesians 2:12,13).
We too can overcome our troubles by relying on the blood of Jesus. Don't limit God's power. “We will not under any circumstances limit the Holy and Unique One of Israel.” To make this confession, we must rely on the blood of the cross.
⑶ The sacred burden must be shared. In the book of Nehemiah, the history of the building of the wall is recorded as the people shared and carried it (Nehemiah 3).
⑷ You must fulfill your mission. Jesus clearly knew what God's mission was (John 4:34). Jesus' mission was the way of the cross of Jesus Christ (Matthew 20:28). The cross is the power that enables me to carry out my mission (1 Corinthians 1:18).
You know that it is God's will, but are there things that are too burdensome to bear?
Jesus prayed to take up the cross. He overcame the burden of carrying the cross through prayer and took it. We must also pray and hold onto our mission. The more concrete prayer becomes, the clearer the will of God becomes and the more you can bear it. Trust in the blood of Jesus. Please share the holy burden and hold on to your mission.
