Title: Training tasks leading to godliness
Text: Leviticus 21:1-9, 1 Timothy 4:6-16,
Godliness is the character of a believer that comes from a life and experience that believes in God and obeys His will. It is recorded in the fear of the Lord in the Old Testament (Proverbs 1:7; Psalm 34:9; 103:13,17; Ecclesiastes 12:13). Applicable. It is also a condition to receive and enjoy the grace of God promised through the Old and New Testaments. The expression godliness appears mainly in the later New Testament epistles: before and after Timothy, Titus, and 2 Peter. Its meaning is ‘holiness of heart and life’, which refers to the central theme of the New Testament, ‘character and actions that are the basis of love for God and love for people’. That is why he said that only zealous observance of certain provisions of the law cannot be evidence of reaching reverence (Isa 1:10-20; Amos 5:21-24). These are the qualities of a citizen of heaven that Jesus spoke of. “Unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:20).
It talks about the level of faith that the scribes and Pharisees, experts in the Old Testament law, could not reach. That is why Paul called this realm the ‘mystery of godliness.’ “Great. Mystery of godliness, there is no one who says otherwise. For he was manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached in all nations, believed in in the world, taken up in glory” (1 Timothy 3:16). Jesus Christ is the mystery of godliness. It is a spiritual reality related to faith in Jesus as the Christ. It is a spiritual reality related to the work of salvation in Christ. It is a grace related to God's unbreakable love (Romans 8:35-39). It is grace in a situation where our lack and failure are not condemned (Romans 8:1).
The task of training that leads to godliness is self and conduct. The Old Testament text (Leviticus 21:1-9) is the sanctification ordinance of the Levites who were consecrated to represent the nation of Israel in the Old Testament era. The condition for being used in the sacrifices on behalf of the people of Israel was an impeccable body and life (Leviticus 21:10-24). If they bless them in the name of the Lord, God promises to give them the same blessing (Numbers 6:24-27). It is the history of God based on the fear of Jehovah in the Old Testament times. In the New Testament era, the condition of such grace is godliness. Gender training in oneself and in life becomes a condition that brings salvation to oneself and those involved. 'The word of faith and the good doctrine that you have followed' (1 Timothy 4:6), 'Set an example only in word, conduct, love, faith, and purity' (verse 12), 'Consider reading, exhortation, and teaching' (verse 13). , 'Be wholehearted in all things, that your progress may be made visible to all' (verse 15). It is the work of receiving and enjoying the grace of the history of redemption and being used.
