Title: Trial in Corinth
Bible: Acts 18:12-17
2009.8.16.afternoon
While staying in Corinth for one year and six months, many people came to believe in Jesus, but persecution continued.
Now, the apostle Paul was arrested and taken to Gallio, who was then governor of Achaia, and asked for a trial.
But it was rejected.
1. Governor Gallio
1) Real name: Marcus Andeus Novartus.
2) Study: Stoic philosopher.
3) Family: The Seneca brothers, the teachers of Emperor Nero.
Adoption of famous orator Juniors Anders Gallio.
4) Humanity: An educated and gentle politician. Received praise from Seneca
5) Position: Governor Achaia (52-53)
6) Last: He left the post of governor as a recruit. He was later killed along with Seneca by Emperor Nero.
2. Paul taken to court
Everywhere Paul went, he was persecuted and persecuted by his fellow Jews. Let's remember that there are always hardships in preaching the gospel. But the apostle Paul was not afraid of it.
The reason for accusing Paul was that he was encouraging people to fear God while breaking the law.
3. Gallio Not Hearing
When Gallio heard the Jewish accusations and tried to make excuses for Paul, he did not want to hear any more. The reason was because they knew that the complaint was about the Jewish law. At that time, in Rome, the vassal states could have their own religion according to their own laws. They had little to do with the service of their gods. Therefore, if you want to file a complaint, you can only get it if you have done something dishonest or bad. was However, if it was according to language, name, or religious law, it was for you to judge for yourself.
Gallio adhered to the principle of segregation of religions. And in the end, the case was dismissed and Quur was expelled from the court. The deceitful Jews could not do anything.
4. Sosthene synagogue leader who was in trouble
At that time, the synagogue leader was the successor of Grisbo, and when the case was dismissed in the court of law, it seems that all responsibility was shifted to Sosthene, the leader of the synagogue, and he caught and beaten him.
Sosthene then accepted Jesus and became a faithful Christian. And, together with the apostle Paul, he became a co-worker in the gospel ministry of the Lord. And it seems that he came to Ephesus with the apostle Paul.
“Paul, who was called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the will of God, and his brother Sosthene”
Sosthene in 1 Corinthians is probably the same person. Since the book of 1 Corinthians was written in Ephesus after leaving Corinth, it is likely that after that, he came to Ephesus as a fellow evangelist with the apostle Paul.
