Content True Sabbath/Hebrews 4:1-11
◈ Proposition: To enter the true rest, we must believe and obey the Gospel.
◈ Purpose: To know the meaning of rest and to have confidence in the gospel
◈ Introduction: 1. The greatest blessing God gives is the blessing of rest.
Heaven is also expressed as rest, and the suffering of hell is described as a state of not obtaining rest.
(Rev 14:11) The Christian's happiness is to find rest in Jesus Christ.
(Matthew 11:29, John 14:27)
1. Four types of rest (shown in the text)
A. God's Rest
1. It is the Sabbath enjoyed on the 7th day after the creation of the heavens and the earth in six days.
2. It is the rest of God that God enjoyed looking at the rest of redemption as well as creation.
3. Mankind lost the rest of Eden because of the Fall, but through the Sabbath or Sabbath year, they lived longing for the true Sabbath.
B. There is peace of mind.
1. This rest is to gain the privilege of participating in the rest enjoyed by God.
2. This rest is the rest you can enjoy in your heart through faith after hearing the Gospel.
3. This rest is obtained through the experience of redemption.
4. This rest is obtained in this world (before going to heaven).
(Example - When you are acquitted, you get peace of mind even if you are not released.)
C. It is the rest of Canaan.
1. This rest is a promise (rest) given to the people of Israel.
2. This rest was a model of heavenly rest.
3. This rest is not the true rest we desire.
4. The people of Israel were obtained through Joshua after they ended their life in the wilderness.
D. It is eternal rest. (Heaven)
1. This rest is the rest to be enjoyed forever.
2. This rest is given to those who have entered into the rest of the soul.
3. This rest is the rest that will be in the future (after the Second Coming).
(After the elapse of time: In order to obtain eternal rest, our goal, we must first obtain spiritual rest, true rest.)
2. How to get true rest?
A. We must hear the gospel.
1. The only way to receive rest is to hear the Gospel.
2. Faith comes from hearing.
3. See Cornelius' experience of salvation (Acts 11:13-14).
B. We must obey the gospel.
1. To accept the gospel and believe it as one's own.
2. Accept, not just intellectual consent.
3. We must obey in the gospel.
C. Reasons for not getting true rest
1. Because they do not hear the gospel (Romans 10:14)
2. They heard the gospel, but their hearts were not harmonized (Hebrews 4:2)
3. Those who heard the Gospel and believed have entered into rest (Hebrews 4:3).
◈ Conclusion: Have we found true rest?
1. Have you ever received rest through the experience of hearing the gospel and receiving the forgiveness of sins?
2. Are you enjoying peace with the assurance of salvation?
