Introduction
1. Socrates, the iron man, exclaimed, "Know thyself!"
a. Perhaps this means that all humans live their lives without even knowing who they are.
b. Or, I think that living life without knowing it even if you know it is the sound of watching and shouting conscientiously.
2. Many people have made many attempts to discover themselves.
cf. Each represents a human being in his/her field of specialization.
Middle - "No going, no coming, no stopping"
Psychologist Erikson - "Man is an emotional animal"
Brald - "Man is a sexual animal"
Evolutionist Charles Darwin said - "Man is an evolved being. Human ancestors were not human."
Chemist Professor C. E. M Zod - "Man is made up of several chemical components."
3. Still, people are not able to accurately diagnose or discover who they are.
cf. The story of a boy walking with his arms wide open - "There is no standard..."
4. There are two kinds of people in the text: Pharisees and tax collectors. One has found who he really is
Only one person could not find his own form.

I. The Pharisee did not find himself right (vv11-12).
A. He was a social and moral exemplary person (v11).
1. He lived a separate life even in an era when social evil flourished.
a.. He tried to live his life in the right way.
b. He did not covet the possessions of others for his own needs.
c. He did not try to live life in an injustice way.
d. He maintained sexual purity in a society where prostitution was formalized.
2. He belonged to a group recognized by his social status.
a. At that time, the Pharisees were a popular class among Jews.
b. He struggled to maintain his piety.
B. He was also religiously thorough (v12).
1. He fasted twice a week.
a. This was a positive attitude that went beyond what the Mosaic Law suggested.
b. This is an expression of how thorough he is with the law.
2. He gave tithes of his income.
a This, too, was a positive attitude that surpassed what the law suggested.
b. This was an attitude to express the extent of his devotion to religious practices.
3. He Was Grateful (v11)
a. He was grateful for the hard work he had done.
b. He was grateful for being distinguished from the unjust and dishonest society.
c. He was thankful that he was not like a tax collector who fills his stomach with the riches of unrighteousness.
d. Indeed, the Pharisees are socially, morally, and religiously exemplary

C. But he did not see himself correctly (vv11-12).
1. He set his own righteous standard upon his boasting.
a. He knew that his outward holiness was everything.
b. He tried to come before God by his own merits.
2. He was so intoxicated with himself that he could not pray properly.
a. His prayer was merely a celebration of his deeds.
b. His prayer was not a prayer, but a boast.
3. Because he was satisfied with his present condition, he could not come before God.
a. He had nothing to pray for.
b. He didn't even need to pray.
cf. Gratitude for not being born as a foreigner, if any, and not being born as a lower-class person
It must have been all thanks to the fact that I was not born as a woman. - This was the rabbis of that time.

c. In a way, he seems to be faithful to God, but in reality, he does not need God at all.
d. He is just bragging before God.
4. For his own ends, he did not choose any means and methods.
a. A proud person who knows himself best.
b. A person who is focused only on justifying himself with his rational thoughts.
c. Others tried to establish and elevate their position, even with contempt.
D. What do we look like?
1. People today are beginning to place moral standards on outward behavior.
a. Inner thoughts became irrelevant.
b. Only the visible has become of absolute value.
2. At some point, we try to find our righteous standards in comparison with others.
a. absolutizes a sense of relative superiority.
b. They try to find the standard in relationships with people rather than God.
c. To this end, an invisible battle is fought internally.
3. At some point, if it is for my own benefit and success, I do not choose any means.
a. The values accepted in the world were accepted in the church.
b. If it's for an end, it doesn't matter the means or the method.
c. This prevails as is normal in the church.
4. Reject God with your own rational thinking.
a. There are many prayers, but many formalities
b. It is discovered when you pray and take your own way regardless of prayer.

II. The tax collector could find himself right (13).
A. He was a man who did not dare to raise his face before God.
1. His life was not morally outstanding.
a. He easily tolerated injustice.
b. Exploiting the possessions of others for their own needs.
c. He tried to fill the alienated heart with the wealth he obtained unfairly.
d. He would have led an ethically flawed life.
2. He was not even religiously correct.
a. He admitted that he was a sinner to the extent that he did not dare look up to the sky.
b. He was frustrated with his lack of being able to satisfy God in his heart.
c. He grieved that his status had nothing to boast about before men and God.
3. He didn't even say a prayer of thanks.
a. There was nothing in his life to be proud of.
b. There was always nothing but shortcomings in his life.
B. But he could find himself right before God.
1. He knew that he could not come before God by any effort of his own.
cf. Ephesians 2:8-9

No, it's a gift from God. It is not of works, so that no one can boast."
2. He knew that he could not satisfy God with any of his actions.

according to the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit.??3. He knew how to be afraid in front of God who sees his inner self.

He had no choice but to confess that he was a sinner before God, who is
4. He knew that there was something more frightening than any crime he had committed.
a. It is still holding a sinful heart.
b. It is the attitude of our inner willingness to accept sin.
C. How do we stand before God?
1. Our actions cannot always stand right.
a. There are times when we accept sin in situations we don't want.
b. In some cases, it is undesirable to hurt people and harbor evil feelings.
c. There are times when we compromise with sin due to the difficulties of life.
2. But we discover that there is an even more evil element within us.
a. It has an attitude of making excuses for and hiding sins.
b. It is an attitude that tries to rationalize and justify one's appearance.
c. It is an attitude that tries to make one's place before God.
d. It is an attitude of living without God's help.
e. However, these attitudes will eventually crumble.
D. We must go forth as we are before God (1 John 1:9)
?쏧f we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and remove us from all unrighteousness.

1. Just as the publican recognized God and moved forward, we must recognize God and move forward.
a. In fact, did he not have any excuses before God?
b. But he was conscious of God and exposed himself before him as he was.
c. At that time, God accepted and exalted him. I was able to find my true self.
2. In discovering ourselves, we must know God's Word as our absolute standard and proceed.
a. Do not consider yourself righteous.
b. Do not fall into excessive sense of superiority and narcissism in comparison with others.
c. Our appearance can only be found rightly before the absolute standard, the Word of God.

1. It was said that if you know the enemy and know yourself, you can win the battle. The important thing is to know yourself first before you know the enemy.

2. God was not pleased with the fluent prayers of the Pharisees and the prayers that boasted of themselves as perfect.
3. Rather, God answered the honest and mournful voice of the publican's heart.
