31. Therefore Jesus said to the Jews who believed in him, If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples.
32. You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
33. And they answered, Since we are Abraham's children, we have never been slaves, so why do you say that we will be set free?
34. Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin.
35. A slave does not remain in the house forever, but the son abides forever.
36. Therefore, if the Son sets you free, then you will be free indeed.
37. I know that you are Abraham's descendants, but you seek to kill me, for my words have no place in you
38. I speak what I have seen from my father, and you do what you have heard from your father.
39. He answered and said, "Our father is Abraham." Jesus said to him, "If you are Abraham's descendants, you will do the works that Abraham did.
40. Now they are trying to kill me, the man who told you the truth I heard from God. Abraham did not do this.
