Title: Two Women Luke/10:38-42
Contents
Scholars who study human relationships broadly classify people into Type A and Type B. Type A is a 'task-oriented person', while type B is a 'People-oriented person'. If Martha in today's text was a work-oriented person, Mary could be said to be a typical human-centered person. In the Bible, Martha appears as always standing and always working. But Mary is always portrayed as sitting and listening to the Word. Doesn't it appear that way in the text as well? See verse 38. “--When Jesus entered a village, a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house.” Who welcomes Jesus? It was Martha. But look at the next section, verse 39. “He had a younger brother named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to him.” What is Mary doing? I'm listening. how? That's right. It was 'sitting'. The kingdom of God always needs both types of people. Before the Lord, Martha and Mary are equally honorable VIPs of Jesus.
Then, how should our attitude of serving change in order to restore the spirituality of thanksgiving in this season of thanksgiving through the two women's incident?
1. Focus on existence rather than achievement.
Why did Mary give priority to hearing the word of the Lord? It must be because he believed that only the word of the Lord made him a man like the Lord. First, they must have thought that they would serve the Lord and their neighbors well with that ability if they lived alone. But Martha wanted to please the Lord by doing many different things. However, as a result, she was filled with anxiety and worry. Martha overlooked that existence precedes action. So, the Bible teaches us to avoid those who are new to the church as a principle of appointing deacons (2 Timothy 3:6) because they have not yet been made men of God. I warn you that if you jump into many things without the maturity of your being, you will become proud of them. How much work have you done in the past year? Do you know that there are more important questions than that? How mature have we become as people of God over the past year? If you are still frustrated after trying many things in your heart today, you need to think about my existence again. And from now on, you need to focus on existence rather than achievement again.
2. Focus on mission rather than comparison.
What did Martha's complaints and resentment stem from? It was obviously because of 'comparing'.
He compared his situation to that of Mary. At that moment, while he was working in the kitchen to the bone, did he not hate Mary who sat down and listened to the word when he sold it before the Lord? Listen to Martha's voice in verse 40. “--Come to Jesus and say, Lord, do you not think that my brother leaves me to work alone? Command him to help me.” Can't you feel Martha's dissatisfaction? Why? Because of the comparative consciousness. So Professor C.S. Lewis points out that Satan's sharpest weapon is the ritual of comparison. Because of our comparative consciousness, we lose the joy of being. You lose the sense of service. The meaning of service is lost. But what if Martha had meditated on the mission she had been given rather than focusing on comparison?
Think about it. Thanksgiving Sunday If you have neither a grateful heart nor a happy heart, why? Isn't it because I'm comparing myself to someone who is better off than me, to my neighbors who are better off than me? Isn't it because of the so-called relative deprivation? So, are you going to give up the ritual of comparison now? And now is the time to focus on your mission, not on comparisons.
3. We must focus on the Word rather than complaining.
How contrasting are the appearances of Martha and Mary in the text? Verse 40 says that Martha's heart was busy. And he is blaming, resenting, and accusing his brother for not helping him. In verse 41, Jesus tells her that her heart is weighed down with anxieties and anxieties because she has so many things that are too hard for her to handle. In today's words, I was suffering from extreme stress. But what was Mary doing when Martha was wandering around like this? Read verse 39 again. “He had a younger brother named Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to him.” Because that word was life. Because it was a wish. Because it was the ability. Perhaps at the moment when her older sister was devoting herself to the Lord and complaining, she was just quietly praying and meditating on the Lord's words. And I would have been able to praise and give thanks from my heart.
