Title: Warning Against Sin/Haggai 2:10-19

Warning against sin

Haggai 2:10-19 Commentary Sermon

Haggai 2:10 On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month in the second year of King Darius, the word of the LORD came to Haggai the prophet, saying,

Haggai 2:11 Ask the priest about the law, saith the LORD of hosts, saying,

Haggai 2:12 If a man wraps the hem of his robe with holy meat, and the hem of his robe touches bread, soup, wine, oil, or other food, will it be sacred?” Haggai asked.

Haggai 2:13 Haggai said, "If he who is unclean by touching a corpse touches one of them, will it be unclean?" The priests answered and said, "It is unclean."

Haggai 2:14 And Haggai answered and said, So is this people before me, and so is this nation, saith the LORD, and so is all the work of their hands; and what they offer there is unclean.

Haggai 2:15 Now, I beg you, from this day on, remember this temple, the time in the house of the LORD, when no stone was laid upon a stone.

Haggai 2:16 At that time there were only ten when they came to the heap of twenty grains; and when they came to make fifty vessels in the winepress, there were only twenty.

Haggai 2:17 I, the LORD of hosts, have struck with the storm and the mold and the hail at all the work of your hands, and you have not turned to me.

Haggai 2:18 From this day on, remember the former days, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, from the day when the house of the LORD was built.

Haggai 2:19 Is there any grain in the storehouse? The vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate tree, and the olive tree have yielded no fruit. But from this day on, I will bless you.

2:10,11 On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month in the second year of King Darius... you shall ask the priest concerning the law, saying,

The 'twenty-fourth day of September', when the word of the Lord came to Haggai, was three months after the people of Judah heard Haggai's proclamation and started building the temple (1:15).

Through Haggai, God commanded the priests to ask questions about the law, and through that question, he revealed the identity of the Jewish people in the past, who were not blessed.

They decorated their belongings more lavishly than God's temple, and sought their own comfort and peace more than God.

Their sins had no choice but to be judged by God, and as a result, no matter how hard they worked, they could not bear fruit.

2:12,13 A man answered the hem of his robe, saying, ...it will be unclean.

The text consists of two questions that God posed to the priests through the prophet Haggai.

The question was a matter of the holy and the unclean.

'Holy meat' refers to sacrifices offered to God

It is not wrapped in a robe, or oil or other plants are made holy like holy meat.

Conversely, if a person who is unclean by touching a corpse touches oil or other plants, the oils or other plants become unclean (Leviticus 22:4-6; Num 19:11-16).

In other words, holy things cannot transmit holy things to other things, but unclean things convey negativity to other things.

To God's question through Haggai, the priests gave accurate answers as recorded in the Law.

2:14 saith the LORD...they even offer them unclean.

This verse reveals the purpose God asked the priests through Haggai.

Here, 'people' and 'nation' are often repeated in Hebrew (Zep 2:9).

The people of Judah may appear to be leading a perfect life, but in reality they were like those willing to do evil 'before God' in God's sight.

They were the ones who preferred to decorate their houses rather than the temple.

Their attitude may have been ceremonially perfect even in the event of a sacrifice, but their hearts had already left God's side.

What God wanted was a life in which God's ethics were practiced rather than ceremonial sacrifices.

(Jeremiah 7).

Sacrifice without mercy and mercy resulted in making the sacrifice itself unclean.

2:15 Now I beg you...remember the times

The Hebrew word for 'before', 'maera', means either the future or the past. Those who claim the future interpret it as referring to future blessings.

On the other hand, those who argue in the past interpret it as referring to the time when the rebuilding of the temple was stopped in the first place, and when there was no proper income despite hard work.

Whether it is the past or the future, what God is trying to say to the people of Judah through Haggai is that there is a huge difference between life in the past and the present life in an unclean state without rebuilding the temple. the fact that it will

On the other hand, 'remember' means 'consider carefully.'

The people of Judah needed to examine and ponder why they did not reap the fruits of their hard work in the past.

It was because of their sin that they sought their own house rather than the temple of God, and their own peace and well-being rather than the glory of God.

2:16 At that time...at the beginning there were only twenty bowls.

'At that time' refers to the past of the people of Judah.

They worked hard, but the results were not always good.

The 'twenty stones' and 'ten bowls', '50 bowls' and 'twenty bowls' are examples of the people of Judah who worked hard for their own peace and joy, but did not get results worthy of it.

2:17 I have all things made with your hands ... and ye will not yeoteot package back to me

'All the work of your hands' refers to the fruits of the land they have worked hard for, such as grains, grapes, and various fruits.

However, it was God's discipline that they did not reap the fruits of their hard work.

Among God's means of discipline, the 'storm' was to dry up crops and trees with a hot wind blowing from the desert.

'Mould' refers to powdery mildew that causes crops to turn yellow and die.

'Storm', 'mold' and 'hail' were absolutely harmful to crops.

God disciplined the people of Judah through it.

On the other hand, 'you have not turned to me' indicates the purpose of God's discipline of them through natural disasters.

God's chastisement against the people of Judah was not to destroy, or to inflict suffering and distress, but to make them realize their sins and turn to God.

2:18 From this day on, remember the former

Jehovah repeatedly exhorts the people of Judah to look back on the past, using 'remember' twice, meaning to look carefully and think.

The 'day when the whole building of the LORD was built' refers to the day when the foundation of the temple was built.

This date does not refer to the twenty-fourth day of September in Haggai's time as the Revised Bible says, but it refers to the year B.C. 537 B.C., when the people of Judah returned to follow the decree of Cyrus and laid the groundwork for the first rebuilding of the temple.

(Ezra 3:6,10; 5:16).

And God exhorts the people of Judah to look back on the past 18 years when the foundation was laid and not rebuilt.

2:19 Is there any grain in the barns? But from today I will bless you.

'Seed' means grain, and 'vine, fig tree, pomegranate tree, olive tree' refers to the fruit of a tree.

Here, vines produce wine, the beverage of the time, and olive trees produce oil used for fuel, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals.

Grain, wine, and olive oil were the most basic ingredients for people's daily life at that time.

At the time when the people of Judah were unclean before God, these basic necessities were not properly provided as a punishment from God.

But now you will receive the blessing of God.

Because they obeyed the word of the Lord through Haggai, began rebuilding the temple, and turned to God.
