Key Verse: (Numbers 21:17) Then Israel sang, saying, Water wells, spring forth; sing it ye.
Israel, who had to bypass the borders of Edom and head north east of the Jordan due to Edom's refusal to pass through their country, was finally out of the wilderness, the land of death, and was almost in sight of the Promised Land of Canaan. However, they still had to overcome many obstacles before they could actually enter Canaan.
In this chapter, scenes are described as Israel overcomes these very internal and external obstacles one by one. Among them, the text is the story of the fountain of God's grace that comes down to Israel who are struggling while overcoming these obstacles. God led Israel to Beer to dig a well and let them get water.
1. Water well from within our hearts.
Jesus promised that he would open in the hearts of believers a wellspring that wells up into eternal life. It's a spring, not a puddle. It is not a broken well, but a permanent Siloam. This well water is the Holy Spirit who refreshes our souls. After Jesus ascended into heaven, He sent the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, to His people. Thus, by allowing the Holy Spirit to dwell among us at all times, he made it the water of life that satisfies each soul. Indeed, the Holy Spirit is filling God's people with passionate love and fresh inspiration today, who are on a pilgrimage to heaven on this rough and dry land of despair. So that we do not forget the song of joy and thanksgiving every moment of each day. Now let us cast off all the sins that block the well that wells up in our hearts, and let fresh springs spring forth. Let the fountain of the eternal Spirit spring forth.
2. In the church, well water springs up.
For too long the fertile land has become barren and desolate. A great drought engulfed the fertile land and devoured all vegetation. The flowers wither and the fruits fall. The church, which should overflow with the living water of eternal joy, is lying like a devastated wilderness, like a river bed cracked by a long drought, bursting and withered. The same is true for rural churches, small churches and large churches. But even now, our Jesus digs a well using His cross as a stick. Malaga carries the cross today to supply the church with eternal life. Also, the Holy Spirit, the source of living water, wants to spring up in us in great quantity and strength. Just as the patriarchs dig a well, just as Israel digs a well under the leadership of leaders according to God's revelation, God wants us to provide new water of life to the church that is being devastated.
3. Well water, Soa-Nara!
In the church of God, well water spring up! Water well from the world! The well water of Beer foreshadows the abundant grace of Jesus Christ who consumed all mankind in the New Testament era. Indeed, God sent His only begotten Son, Jesus, to this barren land to become a well that will never be exhausted. Thus, we who are living in this world receive living water until we reach heaven so that we can always live a rich and satisfying life.
But this well was also submerged in the wild sandstorm of secularization. The entrance was blocked by a huge rock of religious pluralism and humanism. Also, this well has been weakened by our sorrows and sins. The sand of the desert has been covered for a long time and has become desolate. So now the whole world has turned into a world without a well, and it is filled with wells that have wells but have no water. But now we can't let it go any longer. The world must dig a well again. The clogged well must be cleared and the spring water must come out. Let the fountain of grace of Jesus Christ spring forth, the overflowing joy of the Holy Spirit. Now let the millennial kingdom come, where springs spring from the desert and roses bloom in the wilderness.
