How should Christians overcome storms? (Mark 4:35-41)
As the world developed, it became one world, a global system.
So, it is a positive thing for the world to know each other and help each other, but the negative problem is that things that happen in the world become global problems, not just local or regional problems. We always live in the wind and storms.
This is true for spiritual and real life, believers and non-believers.
[2 Timothy 3:12] “Everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.”
Therefore, believers must know how to overcome storms while living in this world in their own way. Only then will we be able to live a victorious life without sinning. Therefore, Jesus took his disciples to the Sea of Galilee and met a storm, and when it became difficult, Jesus woke up.
And he is teaching the way to overcome storms by rebuking and commanding the sea to be calm. [John 16:33] “I am saying these things to you, that you may have peace in me. In the world you will have tribulation, but take courage, I have overcome the world.”
That is, only the Lord can overcome the storm and overcome the storm in the Lord.
In today's text, Jesus is personally teaching us the way to overcome and overcome the coming storm in this world. In other words, the only way for believers to overcome suffering is to believe in the Lord.
How, then, should a Christian cope with storms?
1) Christians should not be surprised by the storms in the world.
It is a fact that the world is always dark and there are storms.
Whether you believe in God or not, you will face the storm. Even in the boat that Jesus, the Son of God, was in, storms happen.
“That same evening, he said to his disciples, “Let us cross over to the other side.” So they left the crowd and took Jesus as he was in the boat, and went along with the other boats. Then there was a great storm and waves crashing into the boat, and the boat was full. (Mark 4:35-37) That is why in this world, anywhere, anytime, anyone can experience storms.
“Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trials that come to try you, as if something strange happened to you” (1 Peter 4:12). It is important not to be tempted in any storm.
Because no storm exists apart from the providence of God. Believe in God and do not be tempted. For saints, temptation is the greatest storm.
2) If a Christian knows that there is God's will and overcomes any storm, blessings will surely come.
Of course, there may be storms that come because we are wrong.
Then we must repent thoroughly and turn around.
However, even in such a storm, the saints should know that if we can overcome it, we will benefit.
In the case of Jonah, he caused the storm by his own fault. But Jonah really repents of his mistakes and repents. “Then he answered, Lift me up and throw me into the sea, and the sea will be calm for you, and I know that it is because of me that you met this great storm.” (Jonah 1:12) Although he suffered and suffered losses, he repented in the fish for three days.
And Jonah truly learns to pray in the fish.
Beloved, overcome your trials. Then we benefit. The saints are in God's providence for any trials, hardships, difficulties, and storms. If you overcome, you will be blessed.
In today's text, the disciples gain great faith by being rebuked by the Lord and overcoming them. He has gained the faith to control even storms.
3) In order to overcome the storm, the saints must walk with the Lord and must always be alert and have fellowship.
As a result, they were able to enjoy the blessing of calming a difficult storm because they boarded a boat with the Lord. Of course, because of my lack of faith, I faced difficulties at first and rebuked the Lord, but in the end, because the Lord was with me, I was able to overcome the storm.
In any case, be with the Lord. Only the Lord can overcome the storms of the world. The power of the storm is the power of darkness, Satan and the devil. So how can humans overcome the storm?
However, the disciples may have been fishermen for more than 30 years, but they did not learn this.
Jesus doesn't teach his disciples how to fish. It doesn't tell you how to net.
We teach you how to overcome by faith in this storm. How to walk with the Lord always.
The problem with the disciples in today's text is that they forget the Lord even though the Lord is in the same boat with them. You may know it at first, but when difficulties come, you forget this.
“Jesus was sleeping on a pillow in the stern, and his disciples woke him up and said, “Teacher, do you not see that we are dead?” (Mark 4:38) If you pray, the Lord cannot sleep. The Lord is God. Only this one can rule the world and overcome the storm.
I pray that you will become the saints of faith that overcome the storm. Amen.
