win with love
Matthew 5:38-42
God's laws are not meant to punish, but to protect. The order to pay back an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth was so that there would be no further revenge.
In primitive times, bloody revenge was common between family and family, and between tribes and tribes. If one of the tribes named Ga inflicted injury on one of the tribes named Eul, then the entire tribe of the victim immediately set out to take revenge on all the tribes of the person who caused the injury. Revenge, of course, means killing someone. For example, Jacob's sons commit a bloody murder when their sister Dinah is sexually assaulted by a young man named Shechem, killing all the men in his city. Therefore, this law, which says ‘an eye for an eye for a tooth’ here, stipulates that only the person who inflicts an injury should be punished, and that the punishment should not exceed the extent of the injury. In view of this background, this law is not a barbaric law, but a law of love and mercy. It should also be remembered that this law was never given for personal revenge, but rather as a standard by which judges set punishments in court. This law can be said to be a law to prevent the escalation of the case by the fairness of the court trial and also bringing the case to the court.
Our Jesus went beyond one dimension, and I say to you, do not resist the evil one, and if anyone strikes you in the right cheek, turn the left as well.
A slap on the right cheek is an insult. Even if it is such an insult, you have to endure it.
Guys, can we turn the left side when someone hits the right cheek? It won't be that easy. Most of the time, a hit to the right will slap the opponent's cheek right away. But we Christians are not to oppose this together, but to win through love.
Also, accuse you so that anyone who takes the underwear should also have the underwear. When someone takes something from me, don't oppose it, but give it to me. Just as Isaac gave to a man who asked for a well, give it without fighting. It's about giving in, not resisting.
And if anyone compels you to let the duck go, go with him up to ten miles, give to the one who asks of you, and do not refuse the one who wants to borrow.
This is to win with love. Even if there are insults, human rights violations, and losses, we should win with love.
dear classmates
Jesus himself was spit on, insulted, despised, and despised, but he never resisted. It is only through love that you have triumphed. We earnestly hope that we too will become those who overcome through love.
