“On the third day, there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee… ” (John 2:1-11)
Word: There are seven signs in the Gospel of John, and the first of them appears in today's text. A wedding feast was held in Cana of Galilee. It is about 7 km from Nazareth, where Jesus lives. Jesus' mother had already gone to the banquet, and Jesus and his disciples were invited. Judging from this fact, it seems that it was a family feast that had a relationship with Jesus.
In the Bible, the kingdom of God is expressed as a wedding feast or a joyful feast. When you go to a feast, there is food, there is joy, and there is excitement. The religious life is like a happy and prosperous feast.
A large number of unexpected guests flocked to the feast, and the wine ran out. In a hurry, Mary asks Jesus for help. It was because I had the belief that Jesus would surely be able to solve it. But Jesus responds coldly, "What have I to do with me? My hour has not yet come" (verse 4). Still, Mary is not disappointed and tells the servants to obey Jesus unconditionally. Mary responded to Jesus' words with greater faith and obedience. Jesus is not saying no, but asking for stronger faith.
The terms ‘relationship’ and ‘time’ are important here. In order for God's work to take place, our “relationship” with God and with Jesus is a prerequisite, and God’s “time” is also essential.
Finally, Jesus commands the servants to fill the six stone jars with water. The servants obey Jesus' words. Then Jesus commanded, “Now float it and bring it to the banquet hall” (verse 8). The banquet hall tastes the wine and likes it very much.
Here we have to pay attention to ‘change’ and see this sign. Change is total and surprising. It is a qualitative change from worthless to valuable. In this change, not only God worked, but Mary’s prayer, servants’ obedience, and Jesus’ work were also involved. In a nutshell, it is the history of synergy. Then God gave him something far superior to what man had prepared and expected. The life of faith is a feast and a life that gets better every day.
Signs not only help us materially and restore us physically, but also reveal the glory of God and make people believe.
