Title: The Wisdom of God. Sunday, October 29, 2006 Sermon
I believe that God will bless you today.
Philosophy is called Philosophy in English. And its etymology is derived from the Greek word philosophia. So, it is a compound word of philos (love) and sophia (wisdom). In other words, the love of wisdom is philosophy.
And referring to this philosophy, the Greek philosopher Plato (Platon = 427?-347?) said: What is Philosophy? It's the best music ever. And philosophy is the life of the awakened. Said. He is truly a fan of philosophy.
But everyone! Perhaps this philosophy is a discipline far from reality. Because this philosophy is not a force to dig through mountains to mine gold in gold mines or to block rivers to develop electricity. And there is no doubt that philosophy is a powerless knowledge that does not teach you the wisdom of baking bread.
However, the necessity of philosophy is not necessarily solely for its practicality. Philosophy brings a creative spirit that lays a solid foundation for real life. Therefore, the construction of reality cannot be achieved without a philosophical background.
Everyone! Humans must be contemplative. And in order to live right, we need to think right. The renunciation of contemplation means the mental bankruptcy of man. So, people think and think and think as they live.
So, the French mathematician, physicist, and philosopher Pascal (1623-62) said that man is a thinking reed. And Plato said that only those who zealously love “truth” become true philosophers.
Everyone! Every intelligent person is bound to become a philosopher at some point. This is because you have to prepare a philosophical foothold on which to stand for your own life. Therefore, if you are a truly intelligent human being, each of you should be able to establish your own view of life.
So the German philosopher Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) put it this way:
do. Don't learn philosophy - learn to philosophize. That is, to think for yourself, to explore for yourself, and to stand on your own.
Everyone! At this hour today, our Lord Jesus Christ says through the words of John 14:6 that I am the way, the truth, and the life. Therefore, any sincere philosopher should follow Jesus Christ the transformer of knowledge.
Everyone! The message of the cross was seen as a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Greeks. First, the Jews sought a sign. They looked forward to the so-called Golden Age of God. So, the Jews have always been tempted not a little by many absurd people.
For example, in 45 C.E. the man “Dedaran” appeared. Thousands of Jews were seduced by this man to follow him. This man said that if I command the Jordan, the water will split in two.
I asked him to go with me. So many people sold houses, sold land, and sold all the household items and followed them.
And then again, in 54 C.E., a man from Egypt called a “prophet” appeared in Jerusalem. This man mobilized a crowd of 30,000 people and took them to Gamnamsan Mountain. And now, if he gives his command, the walls of Jerusalem will fall. shouted aloud.
In this way, the Jews firmly believed in this promise while waiting for a new charismatic leader in the new era. Everyone! look. In this way, the antichrist exists in the past and now, yesterday and today. Therefore, we must not be vigilant in our faith.
But what about it? Compared to these antichrists appearing everywhere, our Jesus was very meek and humble. And he deliberately avoided anything that could be popular. He was seen only as a servant to the people and as a healer of the sick.
And Jesus Christ, who ended his last life on the cross, is indeed
There seemed to be nothing to admire. Moreover, these people are chosen by God
As the Messiah, he could not think of a person who was responsible for the salvation of the nation of Israel and mankind.
On the other hand, to the Greeks, Christians seemed too foolish. Because the person named Plturak says: It is very blasphemy to relate God to human events.
So, to the Greeks, the Word became flesh by retelling the Christian doctrine of Incarnation, which is that God became human. Just thinking about those words made me nauseous.
So, Augustine-Roman missionary (Augustine-?-604), the archbishop of Canterbury who brought the gospel to England, said that, although Greek philosophy was great, there was no case of the saint in it.
At the end of the second century C.E., a man named Celsus, who was a heavy critic of Christianity, said: God is the good, the beautiful, the good, the best, and the most beautiful He must have changed from the best to the worst.
Who on earth would want such a change of God? It is unavoidable because it is human nature to change, but God is eternally unchanging. Because of this, God will never tolerate such a change.
As mentioned above, for the Greeks who thought a lot, there was absolutely no such thing as a city god. Therefore, it was difficult to believe that Jesus Christ, who grieved and suffered with us sinners, was the Son of God.
Therefore, the word God who suffers was absolutely contradictory to the Greeks. The Greeks thus devoted themselves to the constant pursuit of so-called wisdom.
Sophist is a Greek word that originally meant a wise man.
It used to be a term, but it later became a term to refer to people who were clever in thinking, articulate in speech, and well-versed in making bad things look good.
At one time, Greek philosophy dominated the knowledge of the world. A man named Philostratos put it this way: The popularity of the famous philosopher Adrian in Rome was great.
As soon as there was a rumor that he was going to give a speech, the senate was empty and crowded with people from the market and even children playing at the playground.
But everyone! What is philosophy, the product of a man of contemplation? Here the French philosopher and mathematician Descartes (1596-1650) said: “I think, therefore I exist,” says Yugoslavian writer Milovan Djilas. “I am sad. therefore exist”
Then the Danish religious philosopher and thinker Kierkegaard (1813-55) put it this way: “I suffer. Therefore, it exists.” Everyone! Everything that philosophers have realized is like this.
So Kirelkegool goes on to say: Humans are not animals. Also, humans are not angels, and if they were animals, they would not have known anxiety. If they were angels, they would not have known anxiety. But humans are humans. Therefore, humans are said to be insecure beings.
Philosopher Renard Niebuhr put it this way: Humans are too noble compared to animals and too ugly compared to angels.
Everyone! What is a human being in philosophy? It is a lyrical existence. So, each person has their own sorrows (悲哀). In other words, humans are living. But humans are dying. Because life is anxiety, emptiness and boredom, each person drinks alcohol to forget it. This is the limit of philosophy.
That is why Isaiah 29:14 says this. Therefore, God
I will again do marvelous things among this people, marvelous and most marvelous things.
The wisdom of the wise will pass away, and the understanding of the wise will be obscured.
So the Apostle Paul says: 1 Timothy 6:20. Timothy, keep what is entrusted to you, and avoid the vain and vain speeches and arguments of knowledge that are falsely called. There are those who pursue it, and they deviate from the faith Grace be with you.
Colossians 2:8. Beware lest anyone prey on you with philosophy and vain deceit, this is after the traditions of men and the elementary sciences of the world, not after Christ.
Colossians 1:20. If ye have died with Christ in the elementary studies of the world, then why do you obey the question as if you were living in the world?
Ecclesiastes 1:16-18. I have spoken in my heart, saying, Because I have gained much wisdom, I am better than those who were in Jerusalem before me, for I have found much wisdom and knowledge in my heart. 17) I again set my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and foolishness, but I realized that this too is a chasing wind. 18) With much wisdom, there are many troubles, and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.
Proverbs 1:1-7. These are the proverbs of Solomon, the son of David, king of Israel, 2) to know wisdom and instruction, to understand the words of understanding, 3) to receive instruction in doing wisely, righteously, justly, and honestly, ) to make the fool wise, and to give the young knowledge and prudence 5) The wise will hear and increase in learning, and the understanding will gain counsel 6) Proverbs and parables and words of the wise And understand the mysterious words. 7) The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, and fools always despise wisdom and instruction.
Everyone! Let's look at the text (1 Corinthians 1:18-25) once again. The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and I will bring to nothing the understanding of the wise. 20 Where is the wise?
Where is the scholar? Where is the scholar of this generation?
Have you not made wisdom foolish? 21) As for the wisdom of God, since the world did not know God by its own wisdom, God was pleased to save those who believed through the foolishness of evangelism. 22) Jews ask for signs and Greeks seek wisdom. 23) We preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles foolishness, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25) The foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. Amen.
