Title: Worship Only God (Ex 20:4-6)
Contents While the first commandment emphasizes worshiping only one God, the object of worship, the second commandment is about the method of worship that teaches how to worship the one and only God. This commandment is a commandment that God Himself determines the religious attitude that people who believe in God should have toward God, the object of their faith. This commandment tells us the spirit of true worship.
1. The second commandment is not to idolize God.
Don't make a carved image for yourself. What we can learn from these verses is that man makes an idol for himself. It is not made to serve demons from the beginning, but to serve God in the first place, eventually becomes an idol. At first, it was made for artistic reasons or tangible effects, but in the end, this lowers God into an idol. So, in Exodus 22:24, even when building an altar, it is commanded to refrain from carving and to build an altar.
2. The second commandment is to worship only God.
The saying not to make carved idols for you means that the purpose of worship is not to please me. We do not worship for human feelings, we worship to glorify God.
John 4:24 says that God is a Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth. Worship is an act that pleases God and is an offering to God. It is to give thanks for the grace that has been received in worship.
3. The second commandment is not to relativize God.
An idol is a fiction, that is, the materialization of something that does not exist. Idols are fictional beings that do not actually exist. The God we believe in is invisible, but he is real. Nevertheless, people make something for God. But there is never anything that can take the place of God, and it would be a contradiction to do so. The Bible calls what Israel endured as seeing the invisible God (Hebrews 11:27).
