(Introduction)

Hosea's message was born out of a personal heartache for his family.

However, Joel's message was born out of heartache for a national disaster.

The locust plague has come

A series of disasters followed by severe drought (1:19-20). These two events combined to drive the land into famine.

Joel saw the hand of chastisement for Judah's sins through the calamity, so that he had a message to deliver to the people.

Through the locust he saw another “army”, a literal army of Gentiles attacking Jerusalem and the Jewish people (3:2).

In other words, Joel is using God's immediate judgment (locusts) as an illustration of the final judgment (Jehovah's day).

Thus, Joel's book is divided into two parts: a present message about the plague of locusts (1:1-2:27) and a future message about the day of the Lord (2:28-3:21).

Before looking at these two messages, we must understand what Joel means when he says “the day of the Lord.”

This verse is used five times (1:15/2:1.11.31/3:14). Other prophets also use it (Isaiah 2:12/13:6-0/14:3/Jer 46). :10/Zephaniah) The phrase “the day of the Lord” refers to a future time when God will pour out His wrath upon the Gentiles for their sins against the Jews (Joel 3:1-8).

This will take place during the seven years known as the “Tribulation Age” after the church is raptured to heaven (1 Thessalonians 1:10/1 Thessalonians 5:9-10/Revelation 3:10).

This is most fully described in Revelation 6-19.

This will end with the war of Armageddon (Joel 3:9-17/Rev 19:11-21). Jesus Christ will return to earth to destroy his enemies and establish his kingdom.

(Main subject)

1. Jehovah's Day as a Type

Text/1:1-2:27)

1) Proclamation (1:1-20)

Joel gives a speech to different groups of people, explaining this dreadful plague and its devastation consequences

But they did not have this experience, so they could not remember

In fact, they will tell their children and even their great-grandchildren about this dreadful event.

Verse 4 does not show four different insects, but describes locusts in four different stages of growth. There are more than 90 kinds of grasshoppers, and all of them are capable of destroying the Han Dynasty.

Next, he turns to the drunkards who weep and use evil because the vineyard is desolate and there is no drinking water (vv. 5-7).

It is sad to see citizens not crying over what has been deprived of their fundamental needs, but rather over the deprived of their luxuries and sinful pleasures.

When milk prices are raised at milk stalls, the people protest against it.

But they rarely complain when they raise the price of alcohol or cigarettes

Next, Joel turns to the worshipers who have to go to the temple empty-handed because there is no sacrifice to take (vv. 8-10).

He addresses the weeping peasants who have ruined their crops (vv. 11-12).

Finally, he tells the priests to fast (verses 13-14) and pray.

Here we get to the heart of the matter

The reason God punished the Gentiles was because of their sins.

As long as the people obey him, God will send rain and bring a harvest.

But if they turn their back on God, He will turn the heavens to brass and ruin their fields (Deuteronomy 11:10-17; 2 Chronicles 7:13-14).

2) Tribulation (2:1-11)

Joel blows the warning trumpet to warn the people that an army of locusts to destroy is coming

The locusts resemble small horsemen and often exemplify a force that devours anything that lies before them.

3) Lowering (2:12-17)

Joel blows the trumpet a second time

This time, it was a trumpet to call a general meeting to fast, repent, and confess sins.

But this isn't just to rip clothes outward, it's to rip hearts

In 1:13, Joel called a prayer meeting for the priests only, but in 2:16 he summons everyone to join the fast.

There is no doubt that he is reminding them of the promise of 2 Chronicles 7:14.

4) Recovery (2:18-27)

We sounded the alarm and called a general

Now I receive an answer from God

Joel was truly a man of faith

the Lord will answer

God promises to drive out the locust army and restore the pastures

He will give “extraordinary grain” to make up for the amount of years wasted by the locusts, and yet more will be reaped (2:25).

God will do this not because they deserve these things, but so that they and the nations may know that He is the Lord (verse 27).

2. The Day of Jehovah Foretold

Text: 2:28-3:21)

Now Joel moves into the future and speaks of another day of the Lord's Day and the time of judgment that is just ahead

This judgment will bring blessings to the Jews

1) The Holy Spirit will be poured out before that day comes (2:28-32)

This verse was quoted by Peter on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:16-21).

So please read this quotation carefully

Note that Peter is not saying that “the prophecy of Joel was fulfilled.”

He said, “These things have been said before.”

In other words, “This is the Holy Spirit whom Joel spoke of”

Joel's full prophecy will not be fulfilled until the end times with dramatic signs in heaven

When we think without mobilizing our imagination, can we say that Joel's prophecy was fulfilled on the day of Pentecost?

No, what happened on the day of Pentecost was just the beginning of God's blessing on Israel

If the Gentiles had received Christ instead of arresting the apostles and killing Stephen, it would have already come (Acts 3:19-26).

Joel tells us that in the last days of Israel's history (during the tribulation period) the Holy Spirit will work with great power to save Jews and Gentiles and there will be great visions and signs in heaven

These days are recorded in the book of Revelation

2) In that day judgment will be poured out (3:1-17)

Verse 1 makes it clear that the Jews will return to their land and will be saved from exile in the Gentiles.

But all nations will come together to fight Jerusalem, and God will lead them to the Valley of Jehoshaphat, where the battle of Armageddon will be fought on the plains of Megiddo.

Verses 2-8 make it clear that this judgment will be God's punishment of the Gentiles for the way the Gentiles dealt with the nation of Israel and the land of Israel.

Palestine was a plundered land, and many Gentile nations stole wealth from the Jews, and this wealth was theirs.

God will repay them in the day of Jehovah

When God promises to “argument” with the Gentiles in verse 2, this does not mean that God pleads with them to repent. :16/Jeremiah 25:31)

Verse 13 compares war to a ripe grape harvest.

This is a description of the battle of Armageddon (Revelation 14:14-20).

The “valley of judgment” in verse 14 has nothing to do with the meaning of “judgment for the Lord.”

The word judgment implies “thresh”

Nations will be threshed and judged by Jehovah

Christ Will Defend His Land, His People, and His Holy City

3) Blessings will be poured out after that day (3:18-21)

As Joel preached, the people will see dry fields, starving cattle and empty barns.

They will see and hear locusts plunder the country.

But Joel describes a time when wine, milk, and water will flow through the land indefinitely.

This is, of course, the Kingdom Age, when Jesus Christ is seated on David's throne in Jerusalem, the earth is healed, and God's blessings are restored.

The Gentiles Will Be Cleaned And God Will Dwell In Zion

This day reminds us of Ezekiel's last words

From that day on, the name of the city will be called, “The Lord will be there.”

We must not miss the personal application of Joel's message to today's believers.

Of course, God will send natural calamities when nations refuse to obey Him.

War, insignificant crops, epidemics, earthquakes, storms, etc. All these things God can use to bring the people to their knees.

If human beings do not obey God, He can use small insects to do His will.

If we do not obey God's will, our personal lives will be barren and unfruitful.

It is very important to experience sincere and deep repentance (2:12-13).

When we do, God will forgive us and send His blessings again
