Bible Text: Mark 14:3-9
a woman
Two women were hospitalized in the same room. A patient lying on a bed by the window told the patient at the entrance about the scenery outside the window, comforting the boring bedside life. “There are swans flying into the lake and playing. Two young men holding hands and walking affectionately...” The patient lying at the entrance was envious and jealous of the patient by the window.
One night in the middle of the night, a patient lying on the window side complained of pain, and in that case, he pretended to sleep even though he had to ring the emergency bell. A long time later, a nurse came and dragged the bed to the emergency room, where the patient died. I changed my seat to the window I wanted so much and looked out the window first. it surprised me. There was no lake, and no people were seen walking. He was telling a story that was not there to please him.
The woman at the doorway wept. People knew that they were crying because they were close with the patient they were living with. I wouldn't have died if I had quickly pressed the emergency bell and took first aid... … . No one knows how to weep over the guilt that I killed. Two women in one room, one dead, one weeping.
“One Woman” This is today's topic.
What a woman did
“While Jesus was eating at the house of Simon the leper in Bethany, a woman brought an alabaster of very expensive perfumed oil, pure nard, and broke it and poured it on Jesus’ head” (verse 3).
Who is the woman here? According to the Gospel of John, which records the same scene, a woman's name is Mary, the sister of Lazarus. There are six women named Mary in the Bible.
First, there is Mary, the mother of Jesus, and finally, there is “Mary who labored much,” whom the Apostle Paul greets in Romans 16:6.
In the Gospel of John, “There was a supper there for Jesus, while Martha was working, and Lazarus was among those who were sitting with Jesus. Mary took an extremely expensive perfume, a pound of pure nard, poured it on Jesus' feet, and wiped his feet with her hair, and the house was filled with the smell of perfume (John 12:2-3).
Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead after four days. A feast was held for Jesus at the house of Lazarus. Martha works hard and Lazarus sits with Jesus. Mary pours expensive perfume on Jesus' feet and washes them with her hair. The scent of Nad fills the whole house.
The perfume that Mary poured on Jesus is a high-quality perfumed oil extracted from plants from India. A worker's daily wage was one tenarius, but it is a luxury item that can receive at least three hundred tenarions. Mary, who poured expensive perfume on Jesus, showed her love and devotion to Jesus. Mary washes Jesus' feet with her hair to show respect and obedience. The head is a symbol of human fundamental subjectivity. Raising one's head indicates superiority and bowing one's head indicates respect and submission. I see a true worshiper in Mary, who washes her feet with the hair on her head. He is giving the best to the best God.
The phrase “the smell of perfumed oil fills the house” is quite appropriate. Let us also break the alabaster and give the fragrance of perfumed oil.
After this event, the Week of the Crucifixion begins. It is called Palm Sunday. Mary sensed that Jesus' death was imminent. It was the sixth sense unique to women, and the spiritual premonition was activated. If I don't do it now, I think I'll be Han. I did what I really wanted to do. I gave what I wanted to give.
What happened to a woman
“Some become angry and say to one another, “Why waste this ointment? And he rebuked the woman, saying that this perfume could have been sold for more than three hundred tenarions and given to the poor” (verses 4-5).
“Some people” teach all of Jesus’ disciples. All of the disciples attacked one woman. Why do all the disciples waste the perfume? What he said is that one person's thoughts spread to all people.
In the Gospel of John, "Judas Iscariot, one of the disciples, who was going to arrest Jesus, said, "Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred tenarions and given to the poor?"
“I do not say this for the sake of the poor, but because he is a thief, and he has the money box and steals what he puts in it” (John 12:4-6). came. He was angry that the money he was going to steal didn't come in. It's a foyer. It means the thief carries the rod.
You are being scolded for doing something wrong by someone who did a good deed. Pigs are trampling pearls. An unclean person is scolding an innocent person. The unbelievers judge the believers. If you do it wrong, the school authority will trample on grace. Impurity destroys purity. The work of a woman is a sacred value for the church.
Mary was rebuked by the disciples. He said that the perfume he gave was too expensive. What a woman was doing was considered foolish and unconsidered. It was seen as a useless waste. There have always been people who questioned their love and devotion to the Lord. It is still there. They do not understand their love and devotion to the Lord. But Mary loved Jesus more than anyone else in the world, and it was not worth anything to give to him.
“Why do you trouble this woman? He has done good to me (verse 10). He saw a woman who had done a good deed to be harassed by his disciples. Those whom Jesus acknowledges are being criticized and attacked. The true values of the church must be maintained despite criticism. Sometimes the holy minority struggles with the unclean majority. But you cannot stop loving the Lord. Mary is the model of a saint who loved the Lord with all his heart, with all his character, and with all his strength. I loved the Lord more than anyone.
A woman's commemoration
“I tell you the truth, wherever the gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told in memory of her” (verse 9).
Jesus said that the gospel must be preached in the whole world. Gospel means good news. The good news is the gospel. Not all good news is the gospel. The gospel is the message sent by God.
At the heart of the gospel is the news that from the birth of Jesus, He died for us and rose again. It is the good news of God that He forgives sinful human beings from slavery to freedom from slavery. The gospel is the gospel for sinners. It is the gospel for the weak.
There is no one in this world who cannot believe the Gospel. Just because I have sinned does not make the gospel unbelievable. Those who are weak have an advantage in believing the gospel. The gospel is God's net of salvation spread out at the very bottom of life.
The darker it is, the more light is needed, and where there is more sin there is more grace. God does not quench a wick that is extinguished. You do not break a bruised reed.
The climax of the gospel is the crucifixion of Jesus. His death is the atoning death that took my place. And his resurrection. The gospel is that the resurrection of Jesus is my resurrection. That Jesus saved me from being a sinner. The fact is that he is my savior.
When Jesus ate the Last Supper, he broke the bread and passed the glass of wine, and you take it and eat it. This is my body. This is my body, which is given for many. “Do this in remembrance of me” (Luke 29:19).
The New Testament verse 9 says, “Truly, I say to you, wherever the gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told in remembrance of her.” It's not meant to be remembered.
Jesus regarded the sacrament meeting in commemoration of his death as equals the work done by the woman who prepared the funeral. Just as we “commemorate” the death of Jesus, so we “commemorate” the anointing of Mary.
While Peter was trying to block Jesus' death, he was rebuked by Satan to step back from me. Mary poured expensive nard oil for the death of Jesus, telling him that what he did should be shared with the gospel, and that we should not forget and commemorate his history by sharing it. Mary knew that the Lord did not come to be served, but to redeem her life for many.
Mary, the mother of Jesus, looked at him without expression when he was hung on the cross and said, “Look, this is your son.” There is no sign of sadness. It seems that the death of Jesus is accepted as the will of God.
Quality of life is more important than appearance. Mary broke the alabaster jar of expensive perfume. It is a deep spirituality that loves the Lord with all your might. The Lord said that Mary “prepared my burial by anointing my body with ointment with all her strength” (verse 8). I wasn't swayed by what some people criticized. Let us do what is good in the sight of the Lord proudly, without being swayed by people's reputation. That is God-centered faith. If the work I have done is to be shared with the gospel, there is no greater glory than this. I hope you will become a producer of rumors that will be spread along with the Gospel.
Like the sacrament meeting to commemorate the death of the Lord, I hope that it will be a week to think deeply about Mary, who did good to Jesus enough to remind us to commemorate the deeds of women.
