Title About Forgiveness

Lent Meditation (3) - About Forgiveness

Text/ Matthew 18:21-35

1. Introduction

Today, I would like to share grace while meditating on “Lenten Meditation (3) About Forgiveness”. Even if you look at the Bible Dictionary (Biblical Textbook Publication Event), you can see that the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments related to “forgiveness-forgiveness” are presented on as many as 8 pages (1463-1470 pages), between God and man, between God and man. The issue of forgiveness (remission of sins) between people and people is a central theme of Christianity that runs through the entire Old and New Testaments.

In particular, the Lord's Prayer (Matt. 6:9-13) is like two centers of an oval, one is a man's three duties for the glory of God (sanctification of God's name, the presence of God's kingdom, and the will of God) ), and the other three are the three petitions that people make to God (daily bread, restoration of human relationships through forgiveness = forgiveness of sins, and a holy life free from temptation). In the Lord's Prayer, Jesus revolutionized the issue of forgiveness (forgiveness of sins). In other words, in the Old Testament, in order for a person to receive God's forgiveness (forgiveness of sins), he had to offer the purification law and the priests (Leviticus 4:20, 6:7), but Jesus said in the Lord's Prayer that the Old Testament system was no longer needed. is. However, God said that if people forgive each other and restore harmonious human relationships, God will also forgive (forgiveness of sins) that person (Matthew 6:14-15).

2. The Bible Says About Forgiveness

*The priest will make an atonement for him before the LORD, and whatever transgression he has committed will be forgiven him (Leviticus 4:1-20; 6:1-7).

*If you are going to offer your gift on the altar and there you remember something against your brother

Go first and be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift (Matthew 5:23-24).

*Lord's Prayer (Mt 6:9-13) + If you forgive others, the Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, your Father will not forgive you. (Mt 6:14-15)

*Peter, Lord, if my brother sins against me, will I forgive him up to seven times? And he said to Jesus, "Seven times, even earlier...and tell me the parable of the merciless servant..." and your father will always do the same to you, unless you forgive each of you his brother from the heart (Matt. 18:21-35)

*Note: Mark 11:25, Luke 17:3-4, Luke 23:34, etc.

3. What is forgiveness?

first. The dictionary meaning of 容恕 (forgiveness - remission of sins) is as follows.

容恕 (forgiveness): To be sympathetic and tolerant of others' faults, mistakes, sins, and faults. forgive : 1. to cease to feel resentment against an offender. 2. to give up resentment of claim or to requital for insult. 3. to grant relief from payment of a debt.

When we say “forgiveness” we often think of forgiveness for mental-emotional-psychological-emotional-emotional harm, but it also includes forgiveness in a material sense, just as forgiveness is compared to debt forgiveness in the parable of the ignorant servant ( It is the same in the parable of Luke 7:36-50).

second. Forgiveness starts with realizing that I am the person who received the forgiveness of ten thousand talents. In our daily life relationships (married couples-parents and children-work colleagues-friends-churches-social relationships, etc.), we are constantly subjected to small and large wounds. The reason we get hurt is "I am just-I am entitled-I am not at fault-I am rational-I have done my duty-I have rights-I have been courteous-I am pure of my own mind, etc. This is because, on the other hand, the other person does not know me and acts contrary to the circumstances. The fact that we have been hurt, big or small, means that we cannot forgive others, that we will get revenge-retaliation in any form when the time comes, and if that is impossible, we will live ignoring the other.

In the parable of the merciless servant, Jesus warns that this attitude is extremely self-centered and selfish, like the merciless servant who received the forgiveness of ten thousand talents. Why? This is because I did not look back at all the rudeness-no-case-recklessness-foolness-greediness-greediness that I did knowingly or unconsciously. Forgiveness is possible only when I realize that I am the person who received the forgiveness of ten thousand talents.

third. To forgive means to be generous with the circumstances of the person who owes me a hundred denarii. To forgive means to wait. If you lack wisdom or act like this because you don't know what to do, share your wisdom and communicate with me with an open mind before stating the anger-irritability-hwa-beop. To forgive is, above all, to be patient.

Therefore, Jesus said to the disciples who resisted with the sword to the evil crowd who tried to arrest and kill him with unjust and unreasonable false witnesses, “Be patient even this” (Luke 22:51). Lord, for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34).
