Title Blocking the Temptation of Sin
Contents
Hymn: Chapter 202, “Freedom from Sin”
Meditation: The temptation to sin is persistent. There is no other way than the Word and prayer to escape from the persistent temptations that dig into our weaknesses.
Confession of Faith: Apostles' Creed
Text: “Samson went to Gaza and saw a prostitute there and went in to him… .” (Judges 16:1-14)
Although Samson broke the gates of Gaza and escaped from the hands of the Philistines, it was a crisis that Samson did not have to go through. What is Samson's problem? First, you went to a place you shouldn't go. A godly person must be able to discern where to go and where not to go. Second, we saw things we shouldn't have seen. Samson went to Gaza and saw a prostitute. The lust that slept like a dormant volcano in Samson's heart became an active volcano and erupted. It was a woman named Delilah (verse 4). Once again, Samson has committed an irreversible crisis because of his desire for a woman, his Achilles heel.
Who in the world has no weakness? The problem is that many people are not fully aware of their weaknesses. You need to know your weaknesses to be careful and take care of yourself, but if you do not, you will lead a life of failure. Delilah begins to seduce Samson to the point of being tenacious to find out Samson's secret.
Ladies and gentlemen, if you do not resolutely resist temptation from the beginning, you will eventually fall for it. Joseph was able to overcome the temptation of sin by running away from Potiphar's wife when he was tempted. Like Joseph, you too must reject the temptations of sin decisively from the beginning. We must always be awake with the Word and prayer.
Prayer: God who knows our weakness, help us to win the daily spiritual warfare with your Word and prayer. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
