Leviticus 17:11 blood
What do you think of when you hear the word ‘blood’? “Ugh- Why does the pastor talk about blood in the morning? suddenly get goosebumps I'm scared." I don't know if there are people who think. But whether we are afraid of blood or not, we all have blood in our bodies. Perhaps there is no one who says, “I drink a large cup of milk every day, so fresh milk is flowing through my body, not blood”, right?
The blood that everyone has is divided into type A, type B, type O, and type AB according to the coagulation of blood. This is referred to as the ‘ABO blood type’. These days, guessing your personality by this blood type is fashionable among many people. And if the interpretation is good for one's blood type, it makes me feel better because I think I'm a good-natured person.
On the other hand, if the interpretation is not very good, I feel bad for nothing, and when someone next to me says, "Aha, that's why you have such a bad personality, that's why you have such a blood type!" And “Hey, someone made something like that and made me feel bad for nothing! Isn't it scientific to judge personality by blood type?"
Moreover, in Korea, there has been a TV soap opera called 'Type B Man' in the past, so men with blood type B have a personality complex, so they are not good at dating and women seem to hate them. Is there anyone here with blood type B? So, while watching TV soap operas like 'Type B Man', don't you have any intention to sue for defamation? There is a lot of controversy about whether a person can be identified by blood type, but if anyone can scientifically prove this, it would be a significant achievement.
And furthermore, if you could become a scientist and make blood, you would definitely win a Nobel Prize. And your name will be known all over the world and you will become a hero of mankind. In the age of advanced medicine like these days, artificial hearts are also made. However, it cannot make even a single drop of blood that seems simple to make.
Blood is produced only in our living bodies. And this blood is pumped by the heart, starting from the arteries and circulating throughout our body. In this way, blood circulates throughout our body, supplying oxygen, providing nutrients, removing waste products, and exchanging aging cells. And old blood is discharged out of the body along with waste products in the form of urine or sweat, and is also burned through breathing.
On the other hand, if we look at the Bible we have, we can understand God's opinion about blood and God's thoughts well. If someone reads the Bible and doesn't know blood, they wouldn't dare say they know the Bible. Both the Old and New Testaments mention blood in great quantities. And it explains the meaning of the blood.
Today's text says: “For the life of the flesh is in the blood. I have given you this blood to make atonement for your lives by sprinkling it on the altar; for the life is in the blood, the blood makes atonement.” (Leviticus 17:11) And Hebrews 9:22 says: “According to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no remission.”
In the Old Testament, God taught countless times that animals must shed blood and die in our place in order to atone for the sins of mankind. So, in God's temple, many animals died for the forgiveness of human sins, and there was always the blood of animals on the altar of God's temple. However, the death of such animals and the blood of animals were not perfect blood to atone for our sins. In other words, atonement is possible only when the blood of Jesus, the blood of an innocent person, is replaced.
For example, when a person dies due to lack of blood, blood of the same blood type should be transfused, not blood of a different blood type. Moreover, animal blood is different from human blood, so human blood should not be transfused with animal blood. In other words, in order to atone for human sins and breathe life again, the blood of Jesus, which contains no sin at all, is required. There is no atonement for sins with blood other than the blood of Jesus.
Of all the things that Jesus did on this earth, the most precious, greatest, and most important thing is that Jesus shed His blood and died. If Jesus did not shed His blood and die, our atonement and our salvation would not be fulfilled. No matter how many miracles Jesus performed on this earth, if he did not bleed to death, all those miracles would be meaningless.
Have you ever shed blood? Of course, everyone must have spilled coffee at least once. And when you become a woman, you bleed through menstruation. If a lot of blood escapes from our bodies, we eventually die. So, it is said that if you shed a lot of blood, your life is in jeopardy. And when someone next to you gets hurt and bleeds a lot, you get nervous. You might even get scared. That's why there's always blood in horror movies. But in the Bible, there is a lot of blood. God is not here to scare us. It is to teach us this truth because sins are forgiven through blood.
I woke up from a dream on Monday with a shuddering surprise. Because in a dream I had seen the blood shed when a person died. In a small room that looked like a theater that could fit about 30 people, there were five or six gangsters sitting on the seats in the audience. And in front of it was a small stage. Then several other thugs took one person to the stage. The man had ropes tied around his body to keep him from running away.
Suddenly, the gangsters on stage terrified the man he had brought in in front of other gangsters watching in front of the stage. He stabbed them with a knife, ripped their body to pieces... and killed him as cruelly as a carnivore attacking its prey. Blood was splattered all over the small stage, and the blood pooled in red. I couldn't see the horrendous and cruel scene, and I ran out. And then I vomited.
And again the scene changed, and we saw a very barren, cold mountain field. It was a very gloomy place. But when I looked closely, I saw 5-6 thousand birds in the wilderness, flying and sitting in flocks. It was truly a creepy place. But a doctor in a white robe was walking down that desolate mountain. The doctor was on a visit to the village to practice medicine over the mountains.
But, I heard a voice from somewhere. “The oriental medicine doctor must die.” When I heard the sound, I saw that the doctor in the white robe fell down on the mountain where there was no one there. When I woke up, it was dead. But two priests put the body on the altar. Then he picks up his knife and starts slicing the corpse. This is to offer the burnt offering in the Old Testament. Blood oozes from the bruised corpse. The blood is drenched on the altar. And the priest removes the intestines from the body. Their internal organs were burned to God and offered as a sacrifice.
As you know, missionary Kim Jae-yeol, who was doing medical service in Rajin, North Korea, was arrested and detained by the North Korean authorities, and even after a month, he was not released and no one visited. How surprising is it that I have had such a dream under this circumstance? There is something that I desperately realized through that dream. “Someone has to bleed and die so that others can live!”
Ladies and gentlemen, the reason we can live by believing in Jesus is because Jesus shed His blood and died. And for the sake of this gospel, many people shed the blood of martyrdom and died. God saved me and all of you who believe in the blood according to the law that the blood saves lives. That's why we also celebrate the sacrament with wine to commemorate the blood of Jesus.
Guys, what kind of death problem do you have? Cry for the blood of Jesus. Where the blood cries, there is life. When the blood is cried out, God's heart is moved. God redeems us with his blood and sets us free with his blood. Jesus came to this earth to bleed and die. Like a sheep being silently led to the slaughter, Jesus himself climbed the hill of Golgotha to death. And he bled and died. Before he died, Jesus said to his disciples: “Unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit” (John 12:24).
Ladies and gentlemen, when the country is in crisis, because of the sacrifices of the martyrs and doctors who threw themselves and died, the country can be protected and their descendants can live. Without sacrifice, life dies in crisis. Even in a family, if there is no sacrifice from the husband, wife, or family members, the family will die during a crisis. Of course, the word sacrifice, that I, not someone else, bleed to death is not easy in today's selfish society. I would be reluctant to go down that path if I suffered so much and died horribly.
But Jesus said to his disciples. “If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me” (Matthew 16:24) As you know, the cross is a Roman form of cruelty that kills people. In other words, ‘Take up your cross and follow me’ means to be prepared to die and follow me. Therefore, to take up the cross and follow Jesus requires a truly wretched and determined will. Those who wear cross necklaces and cross earrings these days must have such a wretched resolve.
If you just wear a cross as a decoration without such a desperate determination, you don't know the meaning of Jesus at all. The cross must be stained with the red blood of sacrifice. The cross must have the scream of death. That is why our hearts are sober in front of the cross. And I ask myself, “Can I take up the mold of that dreadful cross and follow Jesus?” And “God, give me courage to go down that path.” and pray too.
conclude the word. Jesus shed blood. With that blood we lived. Now, if someone else has to shed blood for my brother to live, we have to bleed again. It seems to be a word that gives too much color and an atmosphere that is too heavy. But because of that blood, we are happy. Because of that blood, we have the hope that we can live in this foreign land. “That blood is a great testimony in my heart. Hear my prayer and grant it all. I am coming to you now, so wash me with the blood of Golgotha.” (Chapter 186)
