Title Come, Holy Spirit (Acts 02:1-21)
Contents Jesus promised to send the 'Comforter' Holy Spirit to Christians living on the earth before he ascended to heaven, but if you look at today's text, the Holy Spirit descended on the day of Pentecost just as he promised. This work of the Holy Spirit was the driving force behind the birth and expansion of the Early Church. Therefore, for believers, what is the meaning of the Pentecost event and knowing who the Holy Spirit is can be said to be the cornerstone of their Christian life.
First, as the result of the Lord's redemptive work of the coming of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit on each saint, the cause of the fundamental severance of the relationship between God and man that occurred after the sin of Adam in the beginning was removed, and at the same time, it is only spiritually present in the future. It foreshadows the perfect fellowship between God the Holy Trinity and human beings when the coming kingdom of God fully arrives. Second, the coming of the Holy Spirit is the moment when the sanctification that announces the birth of the New Testament Church, the new covenant community of God and the body of Christ, is lit. Third, the coming of the Holy Spirit means that the subject leading the history of redemption has changed from God the Father to God the Son and now to God the Holy Spirit.
What was the work of the Holy Spirit that came to the upper room on the day of Pentecost?
1. The Spirit like the wind (Acts 2:2)
Holy Spirit is Ruah in Hebrew. It means 'wind', 'vigorous'. This means that just as humans live by 'wind', that is, breath and breath, believers cannot live a life of faith without the Holy Spirit like the wind. Humans are able to act because they breathe. That is why the Lord also said that if you do not have the Spirit of Christ, you are not a man of God.
In today's text, we see that human Peter, who was so weak - who had denied the Lord three times - was filled with the Holy Spirit and boldly preached the gospel with that power, converting 3,000 people to repentance. Ruach means the ability to strengthen the weak.
2. Holy Spirit like fire (Acts 2:3)
Fire has three functions. That is, light, heat, and purity.
First, fire emits light. Without light, living things cannot grow. The Holy Spirit is the light of truth. It is said that the Holy Spirit helps us to understand the truth, which is the word of God (16:13).
Second, fire has heat. Because it has heat, it saves all things. The Holy Spirit makes you hot. Those who are filled with the Holy Spirit will love God fervently and love their neighbor as passionately as their own body. The church in Laodicea was rebuked because it was neither cold nor hot (Revelation 3:14 or less).
Third, fire purifies. fire burns. It cleanses by burning all the impurities of the heart, such as envy, jealousy, lies, and lust.
3. The Holy Spirit to speak in tongues (Acts 2:4)
The 120 people who came to the upper room were filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke in other tongues. The Jews from all over the world said, "How is it that we hear each of us in the language of our birth?" (Acts 2:8). The work of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost was the one and only work of the Holy Spirit to communicate with each other. This is as seen in the early Christians 'everyone gathered in one place' (Acts 2:1) or 'They made every effort to gather together in the temple together' (Acts 2:46). The reason is that Dr. Syngman Rhee took a moderate course, and Professor Ahn Chang-ho was a bit hard-lined. Even when they did not agree with each other, a young man named Jin-guk, who was following Ahn Chang-ho, even planned to assassinate Syngman Rhee. They were all patriots who wanted to work for the independence of their country, but they all had the same idea, but due to the difference in method, they had to help each other, but instead they had a faction fight.
What is it like for us to live as brothers and sisters who help each other in one God and one faith? Rather, are we not deeply divided due to differences in denominations and doctrines? Like the early church filled with the Holy Spirit, the church in our day today also looks right at the living Holy Spirit God, Or they will have to be reborn as united brothers and sisters who believe.
