Title: Pride Leads to Destruction

Text: (Daniel 5:25-31)

Hymns: 305. You saved a sinner like me

Date: January 21, 2011 (Fri) 5 am

Venue: Jeonju Yebut Church Small Worship Room

After pointing out the foolishness of the proud Belshazzar who does not understand anything through his father's work and history, Daniel reads and interprets the wall that Belshazzar fears and wonders about. What writing is written on the wall and what does it mean?

1. Daniel reading the wall (verse 25)

Daniel first read the wall paper. Written in Aramaic were “Mene Mene Tekel” and “Barzin.” Aramaic was the language spoken in the vicinity at the time, so why couldn't the wise men of Babylon be able to read it? Because God made them unreadable. God allowed only Daniel to read and interpret the wall. So are we. No matter how easy the words of the Bible seem, we can only understand their meanings only when God makes them understand them. If God does not give us the spirit of understanding, we cannot know or understand the Word.

2. Daniel interprets the wall (verses 26-28)

Daniel read the wall and now even interprets what it means. It is truly amazing. Others could not read it, but Daniel reads easily and interprets it without hesitation on the spot. The interpretation of the character ‘Mene Mene Tekel, Barsin’ is ‘I counted, I counted, I weighed (weighed), and it was divided’. This means that God counted Belshazzar's actions and weighed them with scales, but Belshazzar's actions fell short of God's standard of righteousness, so he took Babylon from him and gave it to the Medes and Persians. Belshazzar and Babylon, who fell short of the balance of God's righteousness, will be judged by God. He thought he was the master of this world, but the master of the world was different. We also need to reflect deeply on whether we are not living a life like Belshazzar in this world.

3. The death of Belshazzar (verses 30-31)

Belshazzar was put to death as indicated in the writings of Gebal night, when Daniel heard the interpretation of the epistle. It is sudden death. Belshazzar, who had been hoarding and enjoying food with thousands of nobles until daytime, was killed that night, and Babylon was handed over to the Medes. The fact that God's warning was immediately fulfilled, we can know that God's word will surely come true. God's word will surely come true, even one jot and one tittle. People act as if the execution of the Word is slow, and they think and act as if the Word will not come true to me. But if we live in the vain conviction that the wealth and power we have built up will last forever, the punishment that happened to Belshazzar may strike us tonight.

Belshazzar, who was drunk with power, blasphemed the objects of the temple of Jerusalem and committed blasphemy against God, met a tragic end. We must not be proud before God. I hope that you will always be sober, humble, fearful and trembling saints who fear God.
