A daily newspaper pointed out that we are now living in the age of suicide syndrome, and said that there is an urgent need to redefine the values of the prevailing life-contempt trend in our society.
According to the National Police Agency statistics, the number of suicides last year was 13,055, an increase of 6.3% from 12,277 the previous year. In this tragic time, I hope that through God's Word, the Bible, we can reveal that suicide is a sin and move forward on the noble path of life.
1. Let's look at examples of suicides in the Bible.
(1) Abimelech's suicide (Judges 9:54)
Ahithophel is an example of suicide because she was ashamed of being killed by a woman.
(2) Samson's suicide (Judges 16:30) Samson destroyed his house to get revenge and committed suicide.
(3) King Saul's suicide (1 Samuel 31:4)
King Saul is an example of committing suicide on the battlefield to avoid being humiliated by the enemy.
(4) The suicide of a servant who followed Saul (1 Samuel 31l5)
Saul's servant saw the king commit suicide and committed suicide as a sign of loyalty to the king.
(5) Ahithophel's suicide (2 Samuel 17:23)
King David's counselor, Ahithophel, is an example of suicide after feeling defeated when his plan was not adopted.
(6) Zimri's suicide (1 Kings 16:18)
Zimri is an example of losing the battle for the throne and committing suicide by setting a house on fire.
(7) The suicide of Judas Iscariot (Matthew 27:5)
Judas Iscariot is an example of selling Jesus and committing suicide because of his guilt.
2. Suicide is unacceptable for any reason.
(1) Self-restraint is the sin of breaking the 6 commandments. (Ex 20:13) You shall not murder. Killing others is a crime, and killing yourself is a murder.
(2) God is the creator of man and sovereign over all life. (Genesis 1:26-27) God is the creator of all things and the forerunner of man. Therefore, human beings are precious.
(3) Suicide is distrusting God.
1) Suicide is to distrust God's protection and guidance (Psalm 31:15).
2) Suicide is distrusting God's plan. (John 3:16, 14:1) (John 3:16) God does not want anyone to perish. By giving His only begotten Son, He plans and works so that whoever believes in Jesus will not perish but have eternal life. Suicide is a sin that distrusts and challenges God's plan of salvation.
3) Suicide is rebelling against God's grace (2 Corinthians 12:8-9). The grace God has given us is sufficient grace. Life itself is grace, and it is grace that we have lived up to now. The poet said, “With what shall I repay all the grace you have given me?” But to commit suicide is to rebel against all the grace of God.
(4) Suicide is not the final choice of a person who has committed a crime.
When people reach a dead end, they choose to die. However, suicide is by no means an opt-out option. Suicide is a violation of God's law of survival. It is the worst disloyalty to the parents who gave birth to them, raised them, and educated them. It is a criminal act that inflicts an indelible insult to many teachers, many close friends, family and classmates. Suicide is by no means a free will solution to a problem. Suicide is never courage. It's the most cowardly way to solve a problem.
The God-given solution to the problem is not suicide. Faith, repentance, and prayer. (John 14:1, Psalm 50:15, James 5:13, Revelation 3:19)
3. We must overcome the temptation and urge to commit suicide.
Everyone is tempted to commit suicide. Jacob (Genesis 37:34-35) Moses (Numbers 11:14-15) Elijah (1 Kings 19:4) Job (Job 3:20-21) Solomon (Ecclesiastes 2:17) Jonah (Jon 4.3, 8-9) ) wanted to die.
Everyone has the urge to commit suicide. But suicide is a terrible sin. In this way, we must overcome the temptation and urge to commit suicide. That method is recorded in the Bible.
(1) You must know for sure that God is the master of your life. (Genesis 1:26-27, 2:7)
(2) We must remember God's grace and love for us. (2 Corinthians 12:9, Deuteronomy 7:8)
(3) We must remember that suicide is murder, and there is judgment after suicide. (Exodus 20:13, Hebrews 9:27)
Thirteenth-century theologian Thomas Aquinas argued that suicide is a greater sin than murder. In the Divine Comedy, Dante said that the punishment the suicide receives in hell is as severe as that of a murderer.
Until the 18th century, in Europe, attempted suicide was hanged, and those who committed suicide dragged their bodies out to the public, confiscated their property, and prevented their bodies from being buried in church cemeteries.
However, this time, the space used for Chairman Chung Mong-heon's suicide burial place is 1,000 pyeong, the number of mourners is 10,000, and 1,500 bowls of rice alone are consumed per day on the 5th market. It is said that the average number of National Assembly flowers each day was over 1,000, which cost 1,000 won per song, and 2,000 people followed the funeral procession. Whoever commits suicide, how his funeral is held, or how the world evaluates him, is the biblical teaching that suicide is murder and, after that, the judgment of hell.
(4) No matter what problem you have, you must seek God’s help and endure it (Psalm 31:15, James 5:7)
(5) We must put our ultimate hope in God. (1 Timothy 6:17)
Dear saints,
. We are now living in an age of neglect of life and suicide syndrome. You must believe that God is the creator and sovereign of life and enjoy a noble life. Knowing that suicide is a sin that deserves terrible judgment, we must overcome the temptation and impulse of suicide with faith, prayer, and repentance, and live with hope in the living God. We must believe in the Lord Jesus, who is the way, the truth, and the life, and live a life of thanksgiving, faithfulness, and diligence with the assurance of salvation. I bless them all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen!
