Deceivers (Genesis 27:5-23)
Today's sermon is a scene where Isaac, who had darkened his eyes, actually made a mistake. This is the story of Jacob and his mother who use the dark Isaac to get God's blessings. To bless his son Esau, Isaac hunts wild animals and asks him to cook food. Rebekah overhears this and calls Jacob to dress up like Esau and steal the blessing. Jacob and Rebekah work together to deceive, and Isaac is blinded and deceived. It is a story of cheaters and cheaters. A deceived person is deceived by another. Today, we will discover the will of the Lord through His Word.
manipulator
Jacob and Rebekah work together to deceive Isaac. It is a vile thing to deceive your father by taking advantage of his blindness. It was my mother who suggested this work first. Based on the fact that his father Isaac told him to bring Esau's food, he made a dish of goat meat and told it to Jacob, dressed in Esau's clothes, and decorated his skin like Esau to deceive Isaac. The false attribute is revealed as it is.
Lies appear first. (Verses 15, 16) “Rebekah took the fine garments of Esau, the oldest son, who was in her place in the house, and put them on her younger son Jacob, and adorned them with the skins of goats on the smooth surfaces of his hands and neck.” . When Jacob deceived his father, he put on his brother's clothes and wrapped him in wool to disguise himself as Esau. It is not Esau, but it is decorated like Esau. Originally a deception, a lie has the property of paving the way for plausibility. You can't deceive it by making it clumsy. You can cheat if you look closely and prepare thoroughly. You can see that in the attitude of Jacob and Rebekah.
Lies are also cooperative. This is the case in which Rebekah and Jacob's joint venture deceived Isaac today. Of course, when Jacob first heard the proposal from his mother, he objected, citing reasons. (11,12) “Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, “My brother Esau is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man. This is not to say that deceiving itself is wrong, it is that we are afraid of being caught. And in the end, I follow my mother's suggestion. Not the real opposite. Eventually, the two got together.
Jacob here knows it's dangerous to deceive his father, but by agreeing to do so shows that his desire to be blessed outweighs his desire to do good. Saints should beware of this. I must put the Lord's good ahead of my own. If you are a true believer, you must let the law of the Holy Spirit prevail through the inner struggle. Anyone who proposes a sinful lie is as bad as anyone or anything.
deceiver
A deceived person will be deceived himself. Jacob was deceived by his uncle Laban. To avoid his brother's anger, he runs away to his maternal uncle Laban's house and spends 20 years living in exile. Jacob promised to marry Rachel and worked for 7 years (Gen. 29:18). But Laban married Leah (Gen. 29:23-25). Also, he was deceived by the wages. (Genesis 31:41) "In the twenty years that I lived in your uncle's house, I served you fourteen years for your two daughters and six years for your flock, but you changed my wages ten times." It is said. Jacob was deceived 10 times by his maternal uncle. He had agreed to pay wages and broke that promise over and over again. He deceived his father once, but he was deceived ten times.
You reap much more than you sow. In the end, even his sons are deceived. Jacob loved Joseph especially. But his brothers hated him. Eventually, the brothers sold Joseph to a slave trader (Genesis 37:28). Then he lies. (Genesis 37:31-32) "They took Joseph's robe, and slaughtered a he-goat, soaked his robe in blood, and sent their colored robe to bring it to his father, saying, 'We have obtained this, whether it is your son's robe or not. I'm sorry"
In the text, Jacob took on Esau's clothes and disguised himself with goatskin, and Jacob's sons also took Joseph's clothes and used goat's blood. It goes back to ancient times. How about Rebekah, the mastermind of the scam? She never met Jacob, whom she loved so much. Also, Laban, who deceived Jacob, was later deceived by his daughter Rachel about the Teraphim incident (Genesis 31:34,35).
When there is a time to sow, the day to reap will come. You will not only reap, but you will also reap what you sow. (Galatians 6:7-9) "Do not deceive yourself, for God is not deceived; whatever a man sows, that he will also reap" Jacob and his mother deceived his father Isaac to receive the blessing. But that deception resulted in him having to be deceived just as he had been deceived.
in more detail
God's promise to Jacob is that Rebekah deceived her husband to bless Jacob (Genesis 25:23), "The LORD said to her, "Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples will be separated from your womb. There are those who believe in the saying, “They will be stronger than that people, and the older will serve the younger.” There are those who believe and do so, but that is not the case. Her simple deception only resulted in the fulfillment of God's will.
God works even through human error. It is the same principle as using Judas Iscariot. (Matthew 26:24) The meaning of the phrase is more clear when it says, "The Son of Man goes as it is written about him, but woe to him who betrays him, for it would have been better for him if he had not been born." The Lord's work goes as prophesied, but Judas, who made a mistake, said that it is better not to be born. Just because He works through mistakes, make it clear that those mistakes are not the Lord's.
It should not be interpreted that Jacob was blessed as a result of the lies of Jacob and Rebekah. Jacob's blessing is only the result of God's unconditional grace. Jacob received the blessing as Isaac had blessed, but that does not forgive his sin of lying. What he said just before proves that. (Genesis 47:9) "Jacob said to Pharaoh, "The years of my sojourn are one hundred and thirty years. My years are young, and I am not short of the time of my father's sojourn, but I have lived a terrible time." I had to live life.
Dear saints,
Why are you cheating? Because they don't trust God. God had already said that Jacob would be ahead of Esau, but he did not believe this, so he hurriedly made up a lie. All you need to do is be patient, trust in God, and wait. However, in haste to receive blessings with their own strength, they fall into the trap of this kind of deception. All of you, let's be people of faith who have patience and trust and wait for the Lord.
You reap what you sow. You reap more than you sow. This does not apply only to farming days. It also applies to the religious life. If you sow your faith, you will bear the fruits of your faith. If you sow unbelief, the fruit of unbelief will return. If you sow the truth, you will reap the truth. If you sow iniquity, the punishment of sin will return. If you sow doubt, doubt will return. If you sow a lie, the lie will return. I hope that you will sow your faith and reap the abundant fruits of your faith.
