The wage of sin is death, and the wage of disobedience is a curse. God is patient with sinners, but punishes those who do not turn from the way of sin. This text is a warning to those who do not obey and do not turn to the end with a hardened heart. Let's see what warning God gives.
1. Disobedient cities (verses 22-23)
The calamity of judgment caused by disobedience to God is tragic and terrifying. In the past, there were cities that were cursed by God and destroyed. Sodom and Gomorrah, and Admah and Zeboim next to them. They were cursed by God and perished with plagues, disease, and sulfur. God said that if Israel disobeyed, it would perish like these cities. If Israel were to be destroyed because of disobedience, the people of all nations, including their descendants, would be astonished and asked, “Why did the Lord do such a terrible thing in this land? What caused you to provoke so much anger?” Because the destruction of Israel was unexpected. Such a result cannot but be a shame as God's people. It is because the destruction of those who claim to be God's children is to dishonor God's name.
2. The cause of destruction (verses 25-28)
To those who ask the cause of destruction, people will answer: “They forsook the covenant they had made with the God of their ancestors when the Lord brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed and worshiped and worshiped gods whom they did not know or whom the Lord did not allow.” The main reason for the destruction of Israel was that they worshiped idols. Idolatry is an act of breaking the covenant with God, and it is a sin of treason that does not recognize God's sovereignty. Even today, if we do not keep the word of God and follow idols of money, our own idols, and idols of the world, we will suffer calamity and be pulled out of the land God has given us and become a joke and ridicule of the Gentiles. Therefore, we must keep the word of God with fear and trembling. We must be idolaters, not idolaters.
3. The hidden will of God (verse 29)
God is the one who secretly accomplishes His hidden will. He fulfills the plan of salvation, judgment, and chastisement that you have. The hidden will of God is revealed in the Bible. If you look at the Bible, you can learn about God's salvation plan, judgment plan, and the kingdom of God. Therefore, we who read the Bible must remember and keep God's will and do it. We must take the word of God given to us into our hearts and praise God's greatness with humility. That is to discover the hidden will of God and to live according to God's will. What is the will of God discovered through today's Word? Be a believer who does it.
God has commanded us to keep and keep the covenant. Are we covenant obedient people? Or are we not subject to the curse of God for disobedience? I hope that you will become saints who enjoy the blessings God gives you by being faithful to the covenant.
