Saints are not people who do what they want to do. Even if you want to do it, you must be patient for the glory of God, and you must be able to do the difficult things for the glory of God. Today's text mentions what God commands His people to do and what He forbids them to do. Let's see what it is.
1. Do not invade Edom (verses 4-5)
After the Kadesh-Barnea incident, Israel entered the Red Sea road and wandered for about 38 years in the mountainous region of Edom near Mount Seir. After that, I was ordered to go to Canaan again, but at this time, God commanded me not to invade the area where the Edumians lived. The reason is that the Edomites were descendants of Jacob, the ancestor of the people of Israel, and Esau, their brother. God had mercy on Esau and gave the land to Edom. No matter how good a thing is, it cannot be ours unless God permits it. Also, God provided for Israel to meet their needs during the 40 years of wandering due to disobedience.
Please check if there is anything I covet for my own satisfaction and benefit even though God does not allow it.
2. Do not trouble Moab (verse 9).
God, who had commanded not to invade Edom, commanded not to harass Moab this time. For just as Edom is a brother nation to Israel, so is Moab. They are descendants of Abraham's nephew Lot. Moab is also closely related to the birth of Christ. Ruth, a Moabite woman, became the daughter-in-law of Naomi and remarried to Boaz and became David's great-grandmother, so she entered the genealogy of Jesus Christ. In this way, God's economy transcends human thought.
Compared to human beings who do not know even an inch ahead, God is the one who decides even hundreds of years later. Also, he is the one who always does what he has set out to do. Are we fully trusting God who works for us?
3. The first generation of Exodus died (verses 14-15)
Because of the disobedience of the people of Israel, the first generation of exodus from Egypt died according to God's word. The word of God is fulfilled precisely in this way. From the saying that all the generations of the wilderness died, we can see that the era of Canaan began from now on. God entrusted the conquest of Canaan to a new generation, the second generation. Because the wilderness generation, the first generation of Exodus, gave up the God-given opportunity through unbelief, God passed on a new opportunity to the next generation. God forsakes those who give up the opportunity of grace given to them, and gives opportunities to those who long for grace. Are we a generation that longs for God's grace? Are you a forgetful generation?
Just like in Israel, there are things that God allows and things that God doesn't. We must first discern what it is. And we must do what God has given us with boldness and faith. If God allows it, He will protect it and make it happen.
