A man named Thomas Wolfe said that the central purpose of Christ's life was to heal the loneliness of those living on this earth, so that they could live a life of love. However, the paradox is that the life of Jesus itself was a lonely life. The life of Jesus, who came to heal loneliness, was an extremely lonely life. Jesus also made this confession. “Foxes have dens, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head” (Luke 9:58). It is a word that shows one aspect of a truly lonely life.

You can see that Jesus' life became more and more lonely towards the end. When trouble came, the disciples left one by one. “Behold, the hour is coming, when each of you is scattered to his own place, and when you leave me alone, it has already come; but I am not alone; the Father is with me” (John 16:32). It is truly a message of deep solitude.

The fourth verse “Eli Eli Lama Sabachthani” we read today was also a cry of desperate loneliness, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” Then, why did Jesus have to feel such desperate loneliness and anguish?

First, it was because of our sins.

Although Jesus was sinless, he became a sinner and was crucified. Why? It is because He took our sins upon Himself. However, at the moment when Jesus was crucified, bearing all the sins of mankind and the world, God turned his head toward the Son who had never ceased to be in fellowship with him since eternity. And at that very moment, this bloody cry spewed out of the Lord's lips. “Eli, Eli, lama, sabachthani, my God, my God, why have you forsaken me...” Why did Jesus experience this rejection and betrayal and bleed on the cross? because of my sin. because of our sins.

Second, because of the punishment for our sins.

The cross is not a place to mourn for death.

The cross is not a place to mourn the death of Jesus. It is the place where I become one with the dead tree and the living tree Jesus, and it is the place where my existence is realized. It is a place where my faith is established and anchored. Many people shed tears on the cross. However, if it is to mourn the death of Jesus, we should not shed tears, but rather weep tears of emotion for the fulfillment of my existence.
