Exodus 17:8~16 Jehovah Nissi Topic: 16. Power 2004. 10. 20.

Introduction: The fifth crisis of life in the wilderness - The war against Amalek is won through earnest prayer.

The victory in war lies in earnest intercessory prayer that earnestly calls out to God.

All we have to do is go to the Lord and pray earnestly.

One). Crisis - War with Amalek (8-9)

2). Moses' earnest prayer (10-12)

3). Results of earnest prayer (13-16)

1. Crisis - War with Amalek (8-9)

One). Amalek has attacked. (8)

The leaders of Amalek could not predict whether Israel would pass through them without a problem or would attack and swindle, so they attacked in the end.

2). Joshua made commander of the army (9)

Moses had already given Joshua the responsibility of mobilizing an army for Israel. Therefore, it is quickly mobilized

Amalek's attack was prevented. Therefore, Amalek's attack was an attack on the sick and the old who were behind.

3). Moses promises to pray to God (9)

Moses went up to the top of the mountain around the battlefield, held up his staff, and cried out to God and promised to pray.

Joshua went out to fight himself.

The enemies attacked are disease, injury, prejudice, hatred, temptation, lust, greed, arrogance, loneliness, emptiness, and death. etc.

When enemies attack us, our only hope is to ask the Lord for help.

Our only hope is to earnestly seek the face of God. (Matthew 7:7, Ephesians 6:18, 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Jer 29:13)

Important historical events between Amalek and Israel

① Amalek attacked the weak (Deuteronomy 25:17-18)

② God’s command to blot out Amalek completely (Deuteronomy 25:19)

③ Israel’s rebellion against God and its defeat by Amalek (Numbers 14:39-45)

④ Amalek, Moab, and Ammon allied against Israel and captured the city of palm trees (Judges 3:12-14).

⑤ Gideon's great victory over the combined forces of Amalek and Midian (Judges 7:19-23)

⑥ Saul disobeyed the Lord's command to kill King Amalek (Agag) and lost his throne (1 Samuel 15:1~23)

⑦ King David conquered Amalek (2 Samuel 8:12, 1 Chronicles 18:11)

2. Moses' earnest prayer (10-12)

One). Praying during a fight (10)

Moses' earnest prayer continued while Joshua and the Israeli army were fighting.

(1 Chronicles 16:11, Matt 7:7, 26:41, Luke 18:1, John 16:24, Ephesians 6:18, 1 Thessalonians 5:17)

2). Praying on top of a mountain where all can see (10-11)

This is to show the importance of prayer. (Victory sees only in Jehovah)

3). Determining the Victory or Loss of War (11)

① earnest prayer wins: Israel wins when Moses raises his hand with his staff high (11)

② Weak prayer is defeated: When Moses was tired and lowered his arm, he was pushed back by the enemy's attack (11)

Lesson: When the enemy attacks, God's people must come before God first of all.

(2 Chronicles 20:18, Luke 6:12, Gen 32:26, Psalm 34:6, Psalm 61:2)

4). Needs a stone to lean on (12)

Moses, exhausted from the continuous war, needed a supporting stone to rest and depend on.

Relying on a stone, he was able to continue praying.

The stone is a symbol of the Lord Jesus Christ (Psalm 94:22, Deuteronomy 32:3, Matt 21:42, Ephesians 2:20, 1 Pet 2:6)

Every believer may face a life like the life in the wilderness that is weary and weary.

5). Need someone to help God's servant (12)

When Moses prayed, he needed other people to help him.

Aaron and Hall went up with Moses to the top of the mountain to go to God. (Three servants of God)

All believers need special prayer (intercession) that calls out to God (Luke 6:12, Ephesians 6:18,..)

3. Results of earnest prayer (13-16)

One). Enemy defeated (13)

God gave victory to His people. Amalek was completely destroyed.

2). Victory should be celebrated forever. (Ex 15:1, Psalm 25:2, 92:4, Col 2:15)

In order to be remembered by Joshua and all the people of the next generation, He told us to write down the victory in a book.

3). Enemies will be completely blotted out (14)

They tried to completely remove God's people from this land, but in the end they were judged by God.

The complete destruction of Amalek as a nation was accomplished in the days of Saul and David.

(1 Samuel 15:1~35, 2 Samuel 1:1~8:12)

4). God's name will stand firm forever - Jehovah Nissi (14)

“Jehovah Nissi” is “Jehovah is my banner” (15-16, Ex 17:15)

Moses held up the staff of God as the flag of Israel and as a symbol of Israel.

The staff symbolizes the power of God.

Instead of having Joshua march in victory, he built an altar to God.
