Sermons for Preaching
Title Genesis 2:7-17
The Garden of Eden was also the “Garden of Freedom”. In verse 16, it says, “And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, From every tree of the garden you may eat freely.” In Genesis 2:19-20, right after the text, we can see that God gave all the livestock, the birds of the air, and all the beasts of the field, the names that Adam desired. This fact tells us that in the Garden of Eden, man was able to enjoy all kinds of freedom. But the most important thing for us is that the Garden of Eden was "the Garden of God." In other words, it was a garden in which all abundance, happiness, freedom, and life could be protected only when God's sovereignty and his commands were kept. God gave Adam all freedom in the Garden of Eden, but limited only one freedom. As you can see in verse 17 of the text, “You shall not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for in the day you eat of it you will surely die” was the only restriction on freedom. When a person does not keep the word of God, all the abundance, freedom, and happiness in the garden will be of no use to him.
