Contents

Genesis 37:18-36 Brothers' Retaliation Topic:39. sin. 2009. 5. 17.

Introduction

: The brothers' resentment toward Joseph was serious.

Joseph (1) mentally harassed and tortured his brothers, and acted arrogantly.

② He showed conceit while telling the story of a dream that revealed his superiority over them.

③ Considering the rebellious and violent nature of Joseph's brothers, their cruel treatment of Joseph

This can be considered a natural result.

1. The brothers try to retaliate against Joseph. (18-30)

2. Brothers plead not guilty (31-35)

3. Joseph enslaved to Pharaoh's servant (36)

1. The brothers try to retaliate against Joseph. (18-30)

Jacob favored Joseph, left him at home, and sent his other sons to shepherd him. And on an errand from his father, Joseph comes to his brothers.

One). Discussing how to kill Joseph (18-22)

As soon as the brothers recognized Joseph, they killed him quite a bit. (18)

“The dreamer” They ridiculed conceit in relation to Joseph's dream. (19)

He killed Joseph and threw it into a pit, conspiring to say that an evil beast ate it (20)

“We will see what his dream will become” It is suggested that we look at what kind of fate Joseph will be entrusted with.

(20)

“Let's not harm his life” Reuben, the eldest son, came forward and saved Joseph's life. (21)

“Throw him into that pit in the wilderness” to help Joseph take advantage of the opportunity to escape to his father’s house.

would have done (22)

2). The brothers rejected Joseph. (23~25)

“They took off their colored clothes” and despised Joseph. (23)

“Throwed into the pit” The brothers hated Joseph very much and threw him into a pit without water. (24)

Even while Joseph calls for release, they turn away, and they are so cruel and heartless that they sit down to eat.

(25)

3). sells Joseph to the merchants. (25-30)

When we found merchants going down to Egypt, Judas suggested that we sell him to the Ishmaelites and not touch us, and the brothers obeyed. (26-27)

* He obeyed because he avoided the guilt of killing Joseph and took a small profit.

“I sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver” The brothers made a contract with merchants to sell Joseph. (28)

* Joseph wept and begged his brothers to release him. (Ge 42:21)

When Reuben, the eldest son, returned from caring for the sheep, Joseph had already been sold as a slave and had not been taken away to Egypt. (29-30)

* Reuben was responsible for Joseph as the firstborn. So they tore their clothes and lament that they have no children.

* As the eldest son, how could Reuben be able to tell his father this?

2. The brothers plead not guilty. (31-35)

Now, what should Joseph's brothers say to their father Jacob?

One). He plotted to deceive his father Jacob. (31-33)

Take Joseph's clothes, kill a he-goat, wet them with blood, and show his father the colored clothes. It's to check if it's Joseph's clothes.

Jacob had to admit that the evil beast tore his clothes and harmed Joseph.

2). Jacob and his sons grew more and more alienated. (34-35)

* He tore his clothes and bound his loins with sackcloth, and mourned for his son for a long time, and all his children comfort him.

Wept because of Joseph.

Jacob, who loves Joseph, grieves and says that he will also go to Sheol when he dies.

Sheol doesn't matter as long as he can be with his son Joseph.

3. Joseph becomes a slave to Pharaoh's servants. (36)

Joseph was taken to Egypt and sold as a slave to Potiphar, who was Pharaoh's chief of guard.

What we need to know is that it was God's sovereign work.
