Habakkuk 1:1~11 Habakkuk's Appeal and Answer Topic: 14. Prayer and Answer. 2010. 8. 25.

Introduction

: Habakkuk goes to God with a problem that he cannot find an answer to on his own.

It is that we cannot understand how a just God could allow evil to exist. Habakkuk on this issue

He cried out to God, but there was no answer, and he was filled with frustration. But finally, God answered.

God was neither indifferent nor neglectful toward the sins of the people of Judah. He only gave them a chance to repent and turn back.

Now, the opportunity to repent is over, and God will do justice. He is going to use Babylon to punish Judah for its sins.

1. Revelation from God. (One)

This word means that Habakkuk received a revelation from God.

“Apocalypse” comes from God, and the main thing is the good news of salvation or the warning of judgment.

2. Habakkuk's plea. (2-4)

God's words to Habakkuk were a response to the prophet's long pleas (two things).

1) Praying but not answered. (2)

The Prophet pleaded with God about the unjust reality that the powerless suffer because of those who practice violence, but there was no answer.

After the sudden death of the last previous king, Josiah, the Jewish society was going downhill due to the tyranny of his son Jehoiakim.

The spiritual and moral corruption of the leaders caused great confusion and suffering in the entire Jewish society.

I couldn't help but cry out to him with longing.

“How long?” The cry of the prophet was not answered even though it had been a long time.

The reality the Prophet was in was even more desperate because it was very dark due to the extreme hardship he was facing in concrete and physical form

The prophet's cry for God's silence was desperate.

With God’s silence, “① God is intervening in history, ② how can evil exist in the world and injustice can be tolerated?

The question, ③Is God really good?” is probably the question of all of us today.

2) Ignoring sin. (3~4)

Habakkuk pours out his painful heart to God while accusing him of the reality of all kinds of evil. (3)

The reality of the prophets is the reality of the Jewish society at that time, which causes serious concerns about God's sovereignty and providence.

① The wicked used their evil powers to prosper more and more, and the righteous suffered because of it.

② Because of this, the prophet who was supposed to represent God suffered pain and confusion. accuse it

③ The accusation cried out to God, unable to endure the situation in which God's justice was not enforced at all and continued.

④ The terms used by the Prophet “sin, rebellion, extortion, and violence” are all expressions of evil, emphasizing the atrocities.

“The law is lax, and justice is not enforced at all.” Because God does not punish sin and neglects

it will appeal

3. God's response. (5-11)

God, who has been silent for a long time, now hears and answers the prophet's plea.

1) He will do one thing. (5)

“You will not believe” God will end his silence and do what he has done.

that it is unbelievable.

God will judge evil and establish justice according to his plan, which will surprise Jerusalem.

“I will not believe” means that Babylon will invade and rule Judah. it will happen soon

2) He will judge the wickedness of Judah through Babylon. (6)

“I have raised up the Chaldeans” The wonderful work that God will do is to bring the Chaldeans (today’s Iraq)

you want to listen to it.

At that time, it was the most powerful country and was as evil as Assyria. God will take this Babylon.

Habakkuk said that God appealed for Judah's atrocities and justice, but it is not true that God uses someone worse than Judah to judge.

It is as if an injustice reality continues.

3) The savagery of Babylon. (7-11)

Babylon was going to stand in the strongest position by conquering neighboring countries with a terrifying force as its military power grew stronger. Because of this

Pride and arrogance soar to the sky.

① Their arrogance. (7)

* They are dignified and dignified; they are not afraid to invade and plunder other peoples, and they fear no one.

② Their speed. (8)

* The fierceness (wolf) and speed (leopard) of the Babylonian steed are being compared.

* The cruelty or viciousness of secular power that does not recognize God's sovereignty and service is manifested when we do not fear God.

It shows the evil side of human beings.

③ Won the war. (9)

* Babylon continued to win the war and took numerous captives as if gathering sand.

* Babylon feared a rebellion by moving the people of a previously conquered country, such as Assyria, from the mainland and moving elsewhere.

prevented in advance.

④ Despise the nations. (10)

* They mocked the rulers of all nations and ridiculed their fortified cities.

* The “Battle Wall” was built as a way for Babylon to invade the city.

They easily conquered the strong city through it.

⑤ Trust in your own strength. (11)

* The only thing they trusted and depended on was their own strength.

* Babylon was proud of his military strategy, strength, and weapons.

* “I will sin” God will punish those who acted unintentionally, relying on their own strength, ability, and talent.
