Title Have mercy on one another
Contents
Hymn: 410 (New Hymn 310) 'Ah, by the grace of God'
Meditation: God calls the saints to "be merciful." Mercy is the aspect of life that God requires of his saved people.
Confession of Faith: Apostles' Creed
Text: 'Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy' (Matthew 5:7).
The word 'mercy' means 'to have pity' or 'to show mercy'. What is the cry of those who come before God for help? 'Lord, have mercy on us!' But the word used here is 'mercy'. Translated into a more relatable expression, it means 'sympathize' or 'become together'.
Jesus actually set the example of a life of compassion. While on earth, He had compassion on Israel as sheep without a shepherd. He healed the sick, helped the weak, and fed the hungry. He showed mercy even to those who crucified Him. 'It is because they do not know well.' This is mercy.
We should have mercy on one another because we have been merciful.
The Bible describes God as being rich in mercy. “For the love and mercy of the LORD are endless; we are not to be utterly destroyed” (Lamentations 3:22). The cross is where God's mercy is most evident. At the cross, we can meet God's mercy toward sinners. Without the mercy of God, there would be no cross. Therefore, where there is no mercy, there is no remission of sins, no salvation, and no eternal life. When we look to the cross of Golgotha, we see the mercy of God. Having experienced the mercy that comes from God, we too should be merciful. Compassion is treating others the way the Lord has treated you.
The blessing of mercy appears as a boomerang effect. As the text says, the truth that whatever you sow, you will reap is also applicable here. If you show mercy in front of people, you will receive mercy in return. The starting point of building good relationships is with yourself. This is because human relationships are what moves from me to the other person and then to me again. Not only that, but he also receives mercy from God. We have already been given mercy, but we will continue to need His mercy in the future. Those who are merciful can obtain the mercy of God. When you show mercy, your spirit and body become strong.
Prayer: God, give us your grace and compassion to practice the life of compassion that Jesus showed us. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
