Title Hebrews 1:1 - 14
Contents Main text: Hebrews 1:1 - 14
*** Son of God (verses 4-5)
One of the central themes of Hebrews is the supremacy of Jesus. Jesus is unique in both character and ministry, and he is superior to the angels (chapters 1), Moses (chapters 3), the chief priests (chapters 4-8), and the priests of the old covenant (chapters 9-10). However, it seems that there were people who thought that Jesus was inferior to the angels or even inferior to the angels (Colossians 2:18). But Jesus has a name that is superior to the angels. Jesus is the Son of God. The words of the Old Testament prove the superiority of Jesus. The resurrected Jesus also pointed out to his disciples the evidences in the Bible. (Luke 24:27,45). The Bible alone is sufficient to answer the false teachings about Jesus. As we meditate deeply on the Bible, we will realize more and more how amazing Jesus is, and we will be able to answer the false doctrines of heresies.
*** Divine King (vv. 6-9)
Jesus is not only superior to the angels, but worthy to be worshiped by them. Angels were not allowed to be worshiped because they were merely servants of God. Only God can be worshiped. Because Jesus is the God and King of the eternal kingdom, he is worthy of our worship and can claim it. But because Jesus is invisible, many people are tempted to worship politicians, popular actors and singers, or even church leaders where Jesus would be worshiped. Only Jesus is the one to be worshiped. Are you offering worship and praise to Jesus through words and songs?
*** On creation (verses 10-13)
The author of Hebrews goes on to show that Jesus is superior to the angels. Angels are only part of the creation order, but Jesus is the Creator of all things, including angels. Heaven and earth are finite and doomed to destruction, but Jesus is eternal (vv. 10-12), but Jesus' excellence is more pronounced in who he is. The quotation in verses 10-12 is taken from Psalm 102:25-27, which refers to the Lord Jehovah. The Lord God mentioned here is the same as Jesus. Therefore, it is no wonder that Jesus was allowed to sit at the right hand of God the Father (verse 13), which shows that Jesus conquered sin and Satan. It's just waiting for you. What am I toiling for? Are you toiling only for temporary personal honor or material things? *** Commanding the angels (verse 14)
The Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, shows that angels play an important role in God's fulfillment of His purposes, a point we often tend to underestimate. Verse 14 emphasizes the role of angels serving God's people who will be saved. Angels cannot see their work because they are spiritual beings, but they are working in the transcendent realm, not only working for us, but also protecting us from Satan's numerous attacks. If I understand more deeply the work of angels, I will be convinced that the Lord is capable of mobilizing His almighty means to protect me.
