Text: Ruth 1:15-18, Colossians 3:12-14,
‘Ruth’s filial piety is for many years and ten daughters, and she is David’s grandmother.’ The 10 verse list of the Bible is at the end of verse 1. The beginning of the book of Ruth is a tragic journey of life. Elimelech ('God is King') and Naomi ('beautiful, gracious, sweet') have two sons. It seems that the health of the children who were born was not good. The names of their two sons, Marlon ('sick') and Kirion ('weak'), speak of this. It makes me think that the reason for leaving Bethlehem, the promised land of Judea, was not only because of a famine. However, the ten years of living in Moab were a series of trials that took away almost all of my dreams. It was also a continuation of the loss of men. The first loss was the death of Elimelech (Ruth 1:3). There, Naomi married two sons. Welcoming the two sons, Orpah and Ruth. It must have been another challenge in Naomi's life journey.
However, after ten years of living there, both of their sons passed away. I don't know if it was an unhealthy result. In the end, only three widowed women remain (Ruth 1:5). How can life's journey be like this? There is a saying that life is like a novel, but life cannot be a novel. Because it cannot be rewritten. There is a saying that life is like a play, but life cannot be a play. Because there can be neither practice nor NG (No Good). So life itself is a fact and a live broadcast. The adventures of changing the environment while avoiding difficulties, and the challenges through new human relationships, have all turned away from expectations. At that time, a message comes from Bethlehem, Judea, whom he had turned his back on. It is the news that “the Lord counseled his people and gave them food” (Ruth 1:6).
This message is not from Bethlehem in Judah, but from Jehovah. Anytime, anywhere, true hope comes from God. An unprecedented conversation begins between the three women on the way. It was from my mother-in-law Naomi's mouth. It is a word derived from caring for love. “Go back to your mother’s house, each of you. May the LORD do good to you, as you did to the dead and to me, and may the LORD grant each of you peace in your husband's house” (Ruth 1:8-9a). The kiss of the mother-in-law towards the two sons follows. A kiss of love. The tears of the two mother-in-law that burst out are tears that come out of love rather than out of sadness. The languages of love, the languages of life, follow. “No. We will return with you to your people” (Ruth 1:10).
The following words of Naomi (Ruth 1:11-13) are the background of today's Old Testament text. Today's Old Testament text (Ruth 1:15-18) is the love song of Ruth, the ten daughters of eternity. It is a song where the daughter-in-law and mother-in-law become one, not two. Both Naomi and Ruth have forgotten each other and have only loved ones. Boaz, who ‘takes the business’, was Jehovah’s gift of this unity of love. The New Testament text (Colossians 3:12-14) is the word in the “new life of Christians” (Colossians 3:5-4:6). The general name of the virtues that saints must embody is 'Practice of Love'. When we want to apply these words to our lives on Parents' Day, there is an expression we need. Beyond ‘Mother, Father, thank you’, ‘I love you! Mother, I love you! It is the expression ‘father’. In the expression of love, speaking and writing are essential.
