Sermons for Preaching

Title It Has Been Fulfilled

It is finished / John 19:30

Key Verse: “After Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, It is finished.” He bowed his head and gave up his spirit (verse 30).

Word: When Jesus said “It is finished” on the cross, it is an expression of victory rather than an expression of suffering. The expression “it is finished” is “tetelestai” in Greek. It has the meaning of ‘to bring complete results at once’ ‘to complete at once’ ‘to finish at once’ ‘debt has been settled’ or ‘to be paid in full’. what do you mean? It means that the work on earth was completely completed at once, despite Satan's meticulous sabotage. Then, what did Jesus Christ perfectly accomplished on the cross?

First, He fulfilled God's will regarding the Atonement. Death has come because all have sinned. He completely forgave the sins of all who were struggling in the midst of death. What is the Atonement? It means 'to cover completely'. Jesus' death on Calvary was an event that completely covered our sins with the blood of the forgiveness of sins. “By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all” (Hebrews 10:10). The death of Christ accomplished the work of atonement and completely solved the problem of human sin.

Second, God's will for the law was fulfilled. When Jesus died on the cross, the law was not broken, but the gospel was fulfilled (Matthew 5:17). Jesus Christ, who broke God's law and took on the sins of mankind that could not escape God's curse as condemned by God's law, accomplished the fulfillment of the law by taking that curse on behalf of mankind on the cross. Despite this, there are still many people who live a life of faith with legal thinking. There are many people who live with stubbornness and self-righteousness, caught up in the meritocracy that people are saved because they did good deeds and lived a good life. Let us not let the cross of Jesus be in vain. He has done it all.

Third, God's will for the devil was fulfilled. “For the children are of flesh and blood, and he also belongs to flesh and blood in one likeness, to put away him who has taken over the power of death through death, the devil” (Hebrews 2:14). “The appearing of the Son of God is the work of the devil. to destroy them” (1 John 3:8). The power of Satan, which continued to hinder the work of redemption, was completely annihilated through the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. In other words, these short and solemn words are the culmination of human history and the fulfillment of all mankind's hopes.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help your will to be fully accomplished in our lives as it is already done in heaven. I pray in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
