Title It is finished / John 19:30
The content is finished / John 19:30
“After Jesus had received the sour wine, he said to them, It is finished.” He bowed his head, and his soul departed” (John 19:30).
Today is Good Friday, the culmination of our Lord's suffering. Friday, early April, A.D. 33 On a sunny spring day, a solemn procession to the death of the three men was taking place outside the city of Jerusalem. The destination was a garden called 'Skull', and they came all the way here and hung three people on the cross they each carried. Among them, the words of Jesus on the cross are called 'virtual seven words'. Today, meditate on the virtual seven words and meditate deeply on the last word “It is finished”.
First, the first word of the seven virtual sayings is “Father, forgive them” (Luke 23:34). Jesus, who came to die atonement, prays that even the sins of his enemies will be forgiven. The second word, “Truly I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43) is what Jesus said when the thief on the other side of the cross asked for salvation. The third word is “Woman, behold your son” (John 19:26), which Jesus gave to his mother, Mary, who was weeping at the foot of the cross. Fourth Word "Eli, Eli, Lama, Sabachthani" (Matthew 27:46) "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" It is a cry that bears the wretchedness of the punishment of the sins of all mankind. The fifth word is "I am thirsty" (John 19:28) Our Lord thirsts for sinners, so He has become living water to those who are thirsty. The sixth word “It is finished” (John 19:30) This is the declaration of the Lord who has completed salvation. The 7th word “Into your hands I commit my soul” (Luke 23:46) Jesus ends his last words with “Father” on the cross, the culmination of his salvation work. It means that the eternal plan of redemption established by the Father has been completed.
Second, the declaration that "it is finished" is important. “We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way, but the Lord has laid on him (Jesus) the iniquity of us all” (Isaiah 53:6). Jesus came to atone for our sins. Therefore, the declaration of the fulfillment of this work is “It is finished”. Therefore, the cross is God's only way to save man, and it is the completion.
Saints! The cross of Jesus Christ is God's only way of salvation. Win the Holy Week as you meditate on the Lord who declared “It is finished” on the cross.
