Exams are both external and internal. Although the two are logically distinct, they also occur simultaneously through events. Temptation in the text means temptation. Temptation, like trials, is something to be overcome. To overcome temptation, we need to recognize its characteristics and respond to it.
1. Greed that leads to temptation (verses 14-15)
The purpose of temptation is to separate us from God. Satan uses temptation to prevent us from living the life God wants us to live. Temptation and trial are different. Trials aim to refine our faith like gold, while temptation corrupts and defiles us. The reason Satan uses the strategy of temptation is that the greed in our hearts is very weak against temptation. Greed is a strong desire to achieve something desired. However, if selfishness is not controlled too much and we do not keep the boundaries, we will commit injustice and commit sins. Greed sometimes wears the mask of holy passion. The essence of greed is self-satisfaction. The end of self-satisfaction is death. Therefore, we must learn to control our greed by faith.
2. Words that save souls (verse 21)
So, how can we control our greed? The answer is to abide in the word of truth. The word of truth does not come from men, but from God the Father. When we take the Word into our hearts and receive it with a gentle heart, we can control the greed within us. The Word of God is the sword of the Spirit. The written word was the only spiritual weapon that allowed Jesus to overcome Satan's temptations in the wilderness. Take the Word to heart. Let the Word take its place in us, even in our unconscious. The Word will guard our hearts. It will help you discern temptation and defeat the powers of darkness.
3. Practice to guard yourself (verse 22)
When using a new device, you cannot learn how to use it just by reading the user manual. It is difficult, but when you follow the instructions, you can learn how to use it and use the machine freely. The same is true of spiritual principles. The best way to protect ourselves with the Word is when we not only listen to the Word but also put it into practice. By the way, many people know this, but do not act. The Bible says that a person like this is like a person who looks in the mirror and turns around and forgets who he is. Blessed are those who not only see and hear the Word, but also put it into practice. Such a person is the one who protects himself from the world. Please pray for the will and power to hear the Word and act.
Many people stumble into temptation. Sanctify yourself daily with the Word in the Holy Spirit. Listen to the Word with a gentle heart, obey it, and put it into practice. When you put the Word into practice, you can become a person of the Word. May God's righteousness be done through us.
