Title John 12:12-19 Hosanna Blessed be

Contents

John 12:12-19 Hosanna Blessed Theme: 13. Christ 2005. 3. 20.

Introduction: This is a revelation about Jesus as the coming King. Two concepts of the coming are included (right and wrong).

1. Background; Crowds gather for Passover (12)

2. View of Christ ① Wrong view (12~13) ② Right view (14~15)

3. Reactions ① Disciples’ reactions (16) ② People’s reactions (17-18) ③ Religious people’s reactions; despair and anger (19)

Background: Crowds gather to celebrate the Passover (12)

“great crowd” (Josephus; recorded over two million) ; Each Passover lamb is 256,000 x 10 (equivalent to ten people). Festive atmosphere.

1. View of Christ

One). Wrong view of Christ (12-13)

You see Jesus as the Savior of the earth who will establish a utopia on this earth for God's people.

This erroneous concept sees Jesus as the conqueror, supplier, generous and passive

① Conqueror ; the one who will overcome the problems of this earth by overcoming all enemies of mankind (the evil one, hunger, disease, poverty)

②Supplier; to give people success, abundance and health, to give them flesh and food to eat;

Who will bless people with all the good things in life

③Generous and passive; no matter what a person does, he tolerates it only if he is somewhat religious.

Who will allow him to live as he pleases in spite of sin, injustice, and immorality.

Things that are overlooked

① The demands of Christ - Demanding that all of one's person and property be given to meet the needs of the world (self-denial)

② The spiritual interest of Christ is focused on bringing peace between God and man.

(One). A “great crowd” welcomed - to get all the good things of the earth (King of the earth, considered the Lord of men)

(2). “I came out to meet you” - they didn't just wait for you to come. actively went out

(3). Waving palm branches, they set them before him.

- We welcome Jesus as the great conqueror and powerful savior. ; He will come as king when he comes again

(4). Shout “Hosanna” - “Save me” or “Save us, we pray” Longing to be free

(5). People welcomed Jesus as the political king and the Messiah.

Application: Similar to the present age: You must come out because you love Him, not because you can get something.

2). A Right View of Christ (14-15)

The true concept of Jesus was clearly expressed by riding a donkey.

donkey ; In ancient times it was used to carry loads, especially by kings and royal envoys.

When he wanted to enter a city peacefully, he rode on a donkey with peaceful intentions.

What he shows is that ① he is a savior and ② he did not come as a conquered king.

He came to show people that God is love and that He is a God of reconciliation.

(One). The colt was a symbol of peace (Romans 5:1, Ephesians 2:13-14, Colossians 1:20).

(2). The donkey symbolized service.

Donkeys were noble animals that people used to carry loads. Jesus symbolically shows that He came to carry people's burdens. (Matthew 20:28, Phil 2:7-8, Hebrews 2:14-15, 17-18, 4:15-16,

(3). The donkey symbolized holiness. (John 6:38, 8:28-29, 11:25-27)

The fact that there has never been a person on board before means sacredness. It can be used religiously.

2. Responses (16-19)

One). Disciples' reaction (16)

① I did not realize the meaning and importance of what was happening.

② Misunderstanding Jesus’ Messiahship and Kingship

③ I thought that Jesus would be the King of the world and the Messiah of this earth.

The disciples also misunderstood the Bible; It was the work of the Holy Spirit to make people realize the truth in their hearts (John 14:26).

When the Holy Spirit came, he reminded the disciples of that truth, and they knew that it was fulfilled.

2). People's reactions (17-18)

Many people were serious. “I believed in Jesus” and many others were mere onlookers. (Interesting things,

(Matt 12:38, 23:28, Mark 7:6, Luke 12:56-57, John 4:48, 6:30, 1 Corinthians 1:22-23, Titus 1:16)

3). Religious people's reactions; Despair and Anger(19)

It was despair and anger. After seeing all the scenes of thousands of people welcoming Jesus as the Messiah, they began to rebuke and accuse them of the failure of their plot against Jesus. (John 3:36, 8:24, Heb 3:12)

“The whole world follows him” This is the image of conquering the world. They are filling the road between Bethany and Jerusalem, crying out to be their savior (Acts 17:27, Deut 4:29, Isaiah 55:6, Jer 29:13, Amos 5:4)

“Seek a time when you may meet the Lord. Call on him while he is near” (Isaiah 55:6).

Conclusion: What Jesus shows when he enters on a donkey is ① the savior ② he did not come as a conquered king

Jesus came only to show people that God is love and that He is a God of reconciliation.

If the disciples also misunderstood the Bible, I pray that you will receive the Holy Spirit and realize the truth so that we do not too.
