2004 is a very meaningful year for our church. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the church in 1954. The Bible treats the 50th year as a special year under the name of Jubilee. God told the Israelites to keep the most precious feast, which is the feast of the Jubilee. The Jubilee year refers to the 50th year after the seven sabbaths were kept, and this year was the feast of proclaiming freedom to all the people of the country.
During the Jubilee, two special restorations took place. One is to grant freedom to all servants, and the second is to return all land to its original owner. In the jubilee year, he gave freedom to those who lived as slaves and allowed them to restore their original inheritance that had been lost in their lives. The meaning of the Jubilee is to restore the original position. After all, the Jubilee is a word that refers to Jesus Christ and describes the kingdom of God.
1. Jubilee is a new law.
In the year of jubilee, a trumpet sound was made to indicate that the year of jubilee has returned. Trumpets were blown loudly throughout the country so that no one could hear them. When this trumpet sounded, a law different from the previous law was applied to people. A world where the law of the jubilee takes precedence over all laws. A new law is being promulgated. For example, the difference between the Joseon Dynasty and the Republic of Korea is that different laws govern.
It is as if a new law of life was applied to a world ruled by the law of death. Until now, the law of death has ruled life. Our lives were originally created in the image of God. However, since they sinned, they became slaves to sin and slaves to death. In other words, life became a miserable existence because the law of death ruled all life. But Jesus Christ came and made us children of God. The law of life of Jesus Christ restored my original identity.
Therefore, those who met Jesus Christ have the thrill of finding their identity. Now I have the joy and confidence that I am living as a child of God. The moment we believe in Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ becomes our Jubilee, so we have a new identity. Until yesterday, the law of death ruled over me, but for those who believe in Jesus Christ, a new legal entity, the law of life, rules over me.
In Nice, France, there is a Korean who was naturalized as the progenitor of the French family Lee. 10 years ago, a French young man with blue eyes and red hair named “Philip Lee” asked a newspaper to find out his roots, saying that his grandfather was Korean. His grandfather came to Korea with the information that he was a Korean with the surname Lee. As a result of searching through the literature in the newspaper, it was revealed that the foreign woman who worked in the royal court in Korean was a German woman, Son Tak, the sister-in-law of Russian Minister Webel. When Russia was defeated in the Japanese-Japanese War, Ms. Son Tak moved to Nice, France with a lot of fortune. At that time, she adopted a Joseon boy who worked with him in the court kitchen. It is that this boy married a French woman Emma in Nice and became the father of the French Lee family.
Japan then occupied Korea and our nation was ruled by Japan. Although I am a Korean, the laws of Japan ruled Korea and I groaned for 36 years under that rule. However, the boy, who was adopted by a French man, was brought up there under the protection of a French law that was completely different from that of Japan. Even though they are the same Korean, different laws claim different statuses and lead different lives.
Jubilee is a new law. It is a different law of freedom than ever before. (Romans 8:2) “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.” The reason that the life of the saints is different from that of the world is because they have different laws from a spiritual point of view. The Bible describes the Word of God as law. The Word of God is the law of life that sets us free from sin and death.
After bringing the Israelites out of Egypt, God first gave them the word of God and said that God's people should live by it. The word of God was the law of God given to the people of Israel. So, if you keep the law, you will enjoy the privileges of God's people, but if you forsake the word of God, you will be ruled by the nations of the world and serve them.
When a saint comes to church and starts a new life, it means accepting the new law. Learning and listening to God's Word is learning the laws of the kingdom of heaven that God's people must live. And living according to God's law is the life of faith. God's Word is the law of the Jubilee. Saints are people who cast off old customs and live with new laws. People of the world live with old customs. That's why we live as old people.
2. The Jubilee is the law of freedom.
One of the characteristics of the Jubilee Law is that it is the law that sets us free. The law of the jubilee has the power to set us free from the laws of the past. The Word of God has the power to set us free because it is the law of the Jubilee. The most amazing power of the Word is its power to set us free from the past. The Lord has said that you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.
All laws in the world are laws of binding. The Bible puts away the sins that easily entangle us. Sin takes away our freedom because it binds us. In life, no one got Jubilee freedom until they accepted Jesus. Even though they are thoroughly slaves to the body, they never live for their own soul. Therefore, we have lived in a world where sin and death reign.
There are two laws in law. One is the law of bondage and the other is the law of freedom. The Bible expresses this as the law of the flesh and the law of the Spirit. The Jubilee is the law that sets you free. In the year of Jubilee, freedom is proclaimed and all bonds are set free. God's Word is the law that sets us free. Jesus Christ is the law that sets us free. Because of this, those who believe in Jesus Christ gain spiritual freedom.
When religion is wrong, it becomes a religion that binds people rather than sets them free. If you understand why Jesus rebuked the Pharisees, they did not set people free with the word of God, but rather bound them and made them slaves to religion. So, the teaching of the Lord at the time of Jesus became a revolutionary event for many people. Many people today think of their religious life as a bondage. The life of faith is what sets people free. All religions in the world do not bind people, but we must believe that the gospel sets people free.
Those who are in God are given the power to set everything free. Work can bind people, and vice versa, can set people free. Rest can be entangled and can set people free. A man who is bound is an unhappy man. But blessed are those who find freedom. Some people live with the thought that they are bound by their children, and others live with gratitude that children give them freedom.
When a pastor led the worship service, he always thought that he had no freedom because of worship. I thought that I had no freedom because of all the services from the morning worship service. But after retiring, he said that he came to realize that the freedom of a pastor lies in the pulpit.
A good Samaritan appears in the words of Jesus. It seems that he is not free because of the person he met with a robber, but his service is a form of freedom.
Those who are in Christ are free, not slaves. Because he received the grace of the Jubilee. For those who are in Christ, death is not bondage, but freedom, and even imprisonment is not bondage, but freedom.
