Matthew was a publican who was despised and despised by the Jews. But the gospel that changed Matthew established him as an evangelist for his fellow Jews. So, Matthew begins the Gospel of Matthew with the genealogy of Jesus Christ for the Jews who value lineage and genealogy.
1. Descendants of Abraham and David
Our Bible begins with ‘Jesus Christ, the son of Abraham and the son of David’, but the original Greek text begins with ‘Jesus Christ, the son of David and the son of Abraham’. The reason Matthew put David first, not Abraham, who preceded him chronologically, was that the Jews were waiting for the Messiah who would come as a descendant of David. Matthew presents as the central theme of the Gospel that Jesus Christ is the Messiah, the son of David, whom the Jews have been waiting for.
So, what did Jesus come for? He is the Messiah who came to give the world the true gospel. If the wise men of Jesus' day had known this, they would not have crucified Jesus. What kind of Messiah do we look forward to? Are you the Messiah who will bring blessings on this earth? Or is it the Messiah who will save us from our sins through suffering?
2. God's Promise
God gave Abraham a covenant. He promised that his descendants would multiply like the stars in the sky and like the sand of the sea, and he would become the father of many nations. He also promised David that his descendants would make a strong nation forever. These two promises are also promises of salvation. Matthew shows through his genealogy story that this promise of God was eventually fulfilled through Jesus Christ. God has promised that the kingdom of God will be accomplished through Jesus Christ. God is the faithful and righteous one who fulfills the covenant. God always keeps His promises to us. No matter what hardships and adversity you face, please believe that a righteous God will surely keep His promises.
3. A Jewish yet world-oriented gospel
Matthew writes the Gospel from a Jewish perspective. However, the Gospel of Matthew goes beyond the limits of Judea and aims for the whole world. Matthew's goal is for all nations to believe in Christ and be saved. God chose Abraham and David, but it is not so that the covenant and the gospel can remain in Israel, but that it is preached throughout the world. Just as the Jews, as a nation of priests, had a duty to spread God's covenant and love to the world, we who have received Jesus Christ as our Savior have a duty to spread the gospel to the world. If we neglect this duty, God will remove the candlestick from us, just as He took the office from the Jews.
The Gospel of Matthew is the Gospel that proclaims that the Messiah the Jews have been waiting for is Jesus Christ. Matthew proclaims that God's promise to David and Abraham has been fulfilled. The fulfillment of the promise has saved us. Now we must preach the salvation we have received to all nations.
