Title: One of them
Today, I want to tell you about a nameless man who appeared in the Gospel of Matthew. “At once, one of them ran and took a sponge, dipped it in sour wine, and put it on a reed to drink” (Matthew 27:48). It may be a person who has received grace, or it may be a person who has received the grace of healing.
Today's Bible text doesn't tell us who he is. But he must have been the one who felt that pain as his own when Jesus suffered. This man took a sponge, poured sour wine on it, and ran to the cross to give Jesus a drink. Sour wine has pain relief and anesthetic functions.
When “one of them” brought sour wine to Jesus, it was the time when Jesus suffered the most. It was a time when not only physical pain but also spiritual pain reached its peak. Without hesitation, he ran to the town and prepared a long reed that could reach the mouth of Jesus on the cross. At the end of the reed, a sponge was tightly tied with a string, and sour wine, an anesthetic, was poured over it and placed near the mouth of Jesus.
Of course, drinking sour wine does not eliminate all suffering. However, he did the same thing with a sad heart to reduce the suffering of Jesus by even 1/1000 or 1/10,000. Even though he could be whipped if caught by Roman soldiers.
Others around the cross crucify Jesus, ridicule him and mock him, while others say, “Let's see if Elijah will save us,” just a fun spectacle. Other women don't know what to do and just weep. No one has done anything as practical as 'one of them'.
The Bible says, “One of them ran away.” It wasn't just a careful approach to the cross on foot. The suffering of the Lord was regarded as his own, and he “run” and brought a sponge. Perhaps this man must have run with a bottle of wine on his side. With earnest prayer, Jesus put the sponge in his mouth and hoped that he would drink a little bit of the sour wine, and when he had finished drinking it, he would pour the sour wine on the sponge again and drink it again. He desperately wanted the pain to subside even a little.
However, when Jesus only put the sponge in his mouth, but did not eat it, it must have been sad and covered his eyes with tears. Knowing that it was sour wine, Jesus did not drink it to suffer exhaustively for mankind. But, perhaps, Jesus put the virtuous work he was about to do, deep in his heart and deep in his bones.
Today, we Christians must live in our hearts with the heartbreaking heart of the man who ran to Jesus while he was living on this earth and who tried to lessen the suffering of Jesus on the cross. is.
