Sermons for Preaching

Title Matthew 6:34

Today's text consists of three short sentences. The first is, "Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow." The second is the saying, "Tomorrow will worry about tomorrow." The third is that “one day of suffering is enough.” The first of these sentences is easy to understand. However, the second and third sentences will need a bit of explanation to understand.

First, think about the saying "Tomorrow will worry about tomorrow." It's not about me or anyone else's worry about tomorrow, but "tomorrow" itself. What does this word mean? Of course, this does not literally mean that the time “tomorrow” is concerned. This is because time cannot be a personal subject to worry about. If so, I think it should be understood as meaning that the Lord of time, the Lord of yesterday, today, and tomorrow, and of all time, years, and history, will also be in charge of tomorrow's work. And through that, I think he emphasized that worrying about tomorrow is not our business.

The next sentence, “One day of suffering is enough for one day,” supports and logically goes along with the previous statements. In fact, there is no limit when we start to worry about the problems of our lives. I can't stop worrying about the things of the day. But how much more can we have time and energy to worry about tomorrow? It is difficult to live completely right before God today. The fact that I had a good day today is not because I did well. All are purely by the grace of God. Anyway, if you live by God's grace today, you can leave it to God's grace for tomorrow as well. To worry about tomorrow on your own is both arrogant and foolish before God. I think the saying "one day of suffering is enough for one day" can be understood in that sense.

But we must not misunderstand. The saying, “Do not worry about tomorrow,” does not condemn preparation itself as an individual responsibility for the future of each of us. Jesus is making an issue of our concerns and saying that it is wrong to do what God will do on our own. The problem is that we do not know God or do not allow God to occupy our lives. Jesus also called wise a steward who is unrighteous but knows how to prepare for his future.

Each of us has a work to do while leaving all our worries to God. No, because there is something bigger and more important than that, so don't worry about other things. That is why the Apostle Paul said in Philippians 4:6, “Do not be anxious about anything,” and “In everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” Then, in verses 8-9, “Finally, brothers Listen, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are praiseworthy, if there be any virtue, if there is any praise, think of these things that you have learned from me, received, heard, and seen. Do what you say, and the God of peace will be with you.” He did not forget to exhort. The apostle Peter also said in 1 Peter 5:7, “Cast all your anxieties on the Lord,” and then in verses 8-9, “Be sober and watchful, your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Oppose it," he urges.

To not worry about tomorrow means to obey God's absolute sovereignty and leave everything in His hands. Our lives depend entirely on God. If God has decided to take us tomorrow, no matter how anxious we may be, the only thing we can do is be called. If God wants to call us back 10 years from now, even if we fall asleep without worrying about it, tomorrow will come. Therefore, it is our duty to entrust tomorrow's work to God, the master of tomorrow, to be satisfied with today's day, and to think about how we can be faithful before God today. To have a sufficient day is to secure a sufficient eternity.

The only way to prepare well for tomorrow without worrying about it is to faithfully do today, not tomorrow, but today, not tomorrow. . “Seek first, therefore, of his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” “All these things will also be added to you.” You can understand it by expanding it to mean that it will be given to us today, tomorrow, and anytime.

What did Jesus teach before today's text? Didn't he tell us to pray, "Give us today our daily bread"? This is in line with the saying, “Do not worry about tomorrow.” Living a sufficient day today is the way to prepare well without worrying about tomorrow. Look at the words of Lamentations 3:22-26: "For the LORD's lovingkindness and mercy are endless, and we are not destroyed. / These are new every morning; great is thy faithfulness. He is an inheritance; therefore I will hope in him./ The LORD is good to those who wait and to the souls who seek him/ It is good that one waits in silence for the salvation of the LORD." “Therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow” is believing in “the faithfulness of the Lord.” “The mercy and mercy of the Lord” is not just today, but “every morning is new” and “endless.” So, don't worry, "it's good to know how to wait quietly".

Worrying is a sign of unbelief. What we worry about is that we do not know that all things in this world are created by God. Worrying is a violation of the realm of God's providence. In other words, they do not know the God who is in control of everything, and they are trying to take away the work that God will do. It is ignoring God. What worries us is that we do not know that God is a Father who loves us as His children. To worry is to doubt God's omnipotence and His justice and love. Worrying is distrusting the Word of God. Worrying is therefore a sin against God. Worrying keeps us from doing other things. Worrying is a life of disloyalty that is lived by wasting the years God has given us to do God's will with worldly worries. Worrying is what makes us sick, both spiritually and physically.

As the word "therefore" that guides today's text indicates, it can be said to be a conclusion based on all the preceding words. Then, the reason for saying "Do not worry about tomorrow" should be found in the preceding verses. The culmination of all the preceding verses is none other than the verse 33, which is just before today's text, "Therefore, you must first ask, and all these things will be added to you."

Those who seek the kingdom of God and its righteousness before everything else are the people of the kingdom and children of God. People of the kingdom of God and children of God believe that God is sovereign over all things in the world and that He is their Father. Those who believe that God is omnipotent and rules the world with love and justice and takes care of his children. So, I am a person who doesn't care. He is a person who simply needs to live each day according to the will of God the Father. A person who knows how to live each day faithfully in the Lord and be satisfied with it. He is a person who achieves a happy life by continuing such a satisfying day every day. Let us all live a blessed life forever by entrusting all our worries about tomorrow to God and living each day to the fullest.
