Title Mercy and Rest / Matthew 12:1-21
words to enter
No matter how bad the economy is, when it comes to Chuseok, I still have a generous heart, but this year's Chuseok seems particularly lonely. How would they feel about having to spend Chuseok with many companies going bankrupt and losing their jobs? Political leaders are failing to give the people confidence and hope. Now, our nation is burdened with much toil and sins.
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
The way our people live and the way I live is to come to the Lord. Our hope is Jesus. The hope of the nation is only Jesus.
Last week we said, "Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." I met Jesus who said,
Come to Me without burdens, burdens that you do not have to bear, and do not be burdened with the yoke of sins that you do not have to bear. If you wear this yoke, judgment and death await you. Don't worry, come, don't worry, come don't worry, come and I'll give you.
And now take that yoke upon you. Take on the yoke of the gospel and the yoke of mission. Take this yoke upon you and learn from me meekness and humility, and your hearts will be rested, and your reward awaits in heaven.
I hope you will meet Jesus in the text of this text today.
On the Sabbath, he and his disciples passed through a wheat field. The disciples were hungry, so they cut heads of wheat and ate them.
How hungry would the disciples have been when they saw wheat and forgot the Sabbath and cut it and ate it?
It caught the eye of the Pharisees who followed him with a light on whether there was any fault or no criticism.
Look ./ Your disciples are doing things that are not allowed on the Sabbath.
Jesus says two things about this.
1. God desires mercy rather than sacrifice.
Matthew 12:7 If you had known what this meant, I desire mercy, not sacrifice, you would not have condemned the innocent as sin.
This means that you are talking about the law, but God is a God who wants to show grace rather than law and mercy rather than condemnation.
Jesus gives an example of what David did.
When David was being chased by King Saul, didn't he eat the showbread offered to God, which only the priests could eat?
David lied because he was hungry and ate bread that only the priests could eat, but God had mercy on him.
Did my disciples do this even though they had food to eat and rest? As you know, were they not those who gave up everything for the sake of the kingdom of God and His righteousness, preaching blessings, and following me?
Pharisees ./ Look ./ It's not that your disciples are doing things they can't do on the Sabbath, but how hungry they must have been when they slashed the heads of fresh wheat to satisfy their hunger. God's law said to treat strangers, but we couldn't give them anything to eat. Come to our house and have a meal together. Shouldn't we have a compassionate heart to treat strangers like Lot like Abraham did?
What did God give us the Sabbath? Isn't it the mercy of God? Is it because we have the qualifications to enjoy God's rest?
When God looks at our lives, he sees that we cannot get out of the toil that we have to sweat to survive, so did not God show us mercy and unilaterally stop our toil? It is saying that God has given us mercy and has granted us God's rest.
Sabbath to the hungry is not the law, but the mercy given to those who are full.
The Sabbath that God has given us is for us, not for the Sabbath.
Rather than condemn, rather than criticize, be merciful, allowing everyone to rest.
To explain with an easy example:
Let's say that one of the saints is too hard to live and works even on Sundays.
Rather than saying that other saints who saw this become saints, deacons, and priests and work on Sundays, I want to show mercy to them so that they can worship together and enjoy God's grace without working on Sunday.
If you reject God's mercy while doing things you shouldn't do on a Sunday, God will take care of it.
2 Work for the Sabbath.
Do these words to accomplish the righteousness of God. do it for good Rest is God's righteousness and goodness.
Matthew 12:5 And have you not read in the law that on the sabbath the priests break the sabbath in the temple, and there is no sin?
Matthew 12:6 I say to you, one greater than the temple is here.
Legalists who put more weight on the law than on God's mercy have lost God's mercy and grace. The content of the law was lost and only the form remained.
How many great and great things does God do for our rest today?
He continues to accomplish the work of redemption in Jesus Christ.
God is still working to keep giving us the warm sun and fresh air. God is still blocking the forces of darkness with His Word and Holy Spirit for our rest.
If God stops the hand of mercy working for our rest, we die in that moment.
What do the priests do on the Sabbath?
It is to make sacrifices to God for the sins of the people so that they can have their sins forgiven and enjoy rest. It is the job of slaughtering oxen and sheep and offering sacrifices for the people's rest.
Matthew 12:6 I say to you, one greater than the temple is here.
Matthew 12:8 The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.
As he entered the synagogue, there was a man who could not use one hand. People asked if it was right to heal a disabled man on the Sabbath in order to accuse Jesus.
Jesus told a parable.
12:11 Jesus said to them, Which of you has a sheep and falls into a pit on the sabbath, and will not bring it out?
12:12 How much more valuable is a man than a sheep? Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.
12:13 Then he said to the man, 'Stretch out your hand.' And he stretched it out, and it was restored like the other hand, and it came to life.
The Jews thought that keeping the law and not doing injustice was keeping the Sabbath day holy, and Jesus said that working to accomplish God's righteousness by giving with a compassionate heart is keeping the Sabbath day.
Can a sheep that is drowning in a pit enjoy rest on the Sabbath day?
Isn't it only when you come out of the pit of death and rest in green pastures and still waters?
I am the lord of the sabbath. Our lives can rest only in Jesus, who is the green pasture and the waters where we can rest.
He healed him from a disease like a pit. You rescued me from the pit. There were a lot of good-looking people around, but no one could give him rest by pulling him out of the pit of the disease. Rather, there were those who tried to reach their evil will through his pain.
Jesus, the Lord of the Sabbath, allowed us to enjoy the Sabbath. The Lord saved me. He healed a man with dry hands.
John 5:16 Therefore the Jews persecuted Jesus because he was doing these things on the Sabbath.
John 5:17 Jesus said to them, "My Father works until now, and I work."
closing words
God wants mercy rather than sacrifice.
Who are we?
To those who cut the ears of grain on the Sabbath, why do they cut the ears and eat them on the Sabbath?
How hungry should I cut the ears to eat on the sabbath?
is it ?
12:19 He will not quarrel, nor will he be heard, and no one will hear his voice on the road.
12:20 A bruised reed he will not break, nor a smoldering wick he will not quench, until judgment is overcome.
He is pleased with those who have a compassionate heart and give rest to those who cannot enjoy rest. The Lord does not break a bruised reed or quench a smoldering wick until he judges and overcomes them. you want
