must be filial
There was an incident in which a son in his 50s killed an elderly woman in his 80s who had dementia while saying he would do filial piety. It's a really sad case that you don't know what filial piety is. Koreans have long been known as a nation and people who are filial to their parents. But internally, we can't help but lament that this good custom is gradually fading. Why should we serve and serve our parents? I will tell you three things through the homily.
I. You have to be filial because it is the right thing to do.
In verse 1 of the text, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.” Here, “this is right” means both “righteous things” and “natural things”. No matter how much the world changes and changes, it is righteous and natural to be filial to your parents. The Old Testament is no exception. Jehovah God gave Moses the Ten Commandments in Exodus 20. The first four commandments are about God, and the other six are about humans. But the first of the commandments concerning mankind is to honor one's parents. Because it forms the basis of the commandment concerning man. Hopefully, all of our Seongsan family will do what is right and natural by filial piety to our parents.
II. Because it is the first commandment with a promise, we must filial it.
In verse 2 of the text, “Honor your father and mother, for these are the first commandments with a promise…” A promise is a promise that must be kept. Promises that are not kept are meaningless. The text is said to be the first commandment. The first commandment is very important. When the first commandment is broken, dominoes occur. If the first commandment is not kept, the last 5 commandments will not be kept, and the promise will be broken. Responsibility for breaking the promise is borne by the person who broke the promise. Therefore, we must keep the first commandment well. I believe you will be blessed.
Deuteronomy 28:1-6 “If you listen carefully to the word of the LORD your God, and keep and do all his commands that I am giving you today, the LORD your God will set you above all the nations of the world. And all these blessings will come upon you and come to you, Verse 3 Blessed shall be in the city and blessing in the fields, 4 Blessed shall be the children of your own body, and the produce of your land, and the offspring of your beasts, and the offspring of oxen and sheep. 5 and your basket and your bowl of dough will be blessed; 6 you will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out.” We Christians are saved by faith and are blessed by works. I pray in the name of the Lord that you will be blessed by keeping the first commandment with promise, the word of the Lord your God.
Ⅲ. You should do this because you will prosper and you will live a long life on the earth.
In verse 3 of the text, “In this way, it may be well with you and you may live a long life on the earth.” In Ruth 1:16-17, the confession of the filial father Ruth is recorded. “Verse 16 Ruth said to her, “Do not compel me to go away from you and not follow you. Wherever you go, I will go, and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God. 17 Where you die, I will die and be buried there. “I want you.”
How beautiful is this confession? After chasing after her mother-in-law, Naomi, who was lost in her foreign life and returned to her home country, there is no hope in the world. Perhaps famine and despair death await. On the other hand, there is no hope for a new family. In Ruth 1:11-13, Naomi said, "Go back, my daughters. How can you go with me? Do you still have sons in my womb who will be your husbands?" Verse 12 Go back, my daughters. For example, if I say that I have hope, or if I have husbands and have sons tonight, verse 13 How can you wait for them to grow up, and how do you decide to live without a husband? It is not so, my daughters.” One Ruth swears before God that she will never leave her mother except to die.
Did Ruth have a drop of blood with her mother-in-law Naomi? But do you have a son born to your mother-in-law? From a human point of view, there is no reason at all to follow your mother-in-law and step into her hometown. What's more, doesn't your mother-in-law tell you to go back in consideration of Ruth's circumstances? Nevertheless, Ruth held on to the faithful word of God and served her mother-in-law Naomi with utmost sincerity. Ruth, a widow, followed her mother-in-law to the land of Israel as a Gentile and gained the glory of becoming the father of Jesus.
In Matthew 1, verse 5 of the genealogy of Jesus says, “Salmon fathered Boaz by Rahab, Boaz fathered Obed by Ruth, and Obed fathered Jesse…” Yes. Ruth, a widow who lost her husband and had no people or property, devoted all of her heart to filial piety to her mother-in-law, who had no people or property. Honor your father and mother, for this is the first commandment with a promise, so that it may go well with you and that you may live long on the earth.” I hope that you will be blessed by filial piety.
I will conclude
“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother. This is the first commandment with a promise, that it may go well with you and that you may live long on the earth.” God's promise remains unchanged today. Even if heaven and earth change, God's promises do not change, even one jot or one tittle. I hope that you will be blessed by filial piety, I bless you in the name of the Lord.
