Title Now with salt/Matthew 5:13
Content Now with salt/Mt 5:13
Key Verse: “You are the salt of the world; if salt loses its savor, with what is it salted?
Word: The amount of salt that makes seawater salty is only 2.071%. It is a much smaller amount than expected. Now, when the number of Christians in Korea exceeds 10 million, how is the influence of Christians on the world? According to the 'Bribery Index' conducted by a German public opinion poll recently, Korea ranked 4th out of 21 countries in the world. It is a shame indeed. Rather than blaming anyone, Christians should first take the lead in practicing integrity and justice.
The text teaches how believers should live in this era full of sin. “You are the salt of the world” Why did Jesus tell us to live with salt?
‘Salt prevents spoilage.’ Salt acts as a preservative to keep food from spoiling. Wherever Christians go, they too must make sure that there is no decay. “Whatever is true, whatever is godly, whatever is just” (Philippians 4:8), we must live truthfully and truthfully in all things.
‘Salt gives taste.’ Without salt, no food will taste good. The salt must first dissolve in the food to taste. To melt is to kill yourself. The Lord is asking believers to serve with humility and love in order to make the world a better place to live.
‘Salt provides vitality.’ It is said that the minimum daily salt intake required by the human body is about 10 to 15 g. If this is not supplied, wastes cannot be excreted, resulting in disease and life-threatening. In the same way, Christians are to be indispensable, giving life to society without revealing themselves in silence. When Christians fail to fulfill the role of salt as above, the Lord warns them terribly. “When salt loses its taste, it is thrown out and trampled.”
At the time of Jesus, there was a lot of rock salt in Israel. Rock salt loses all its salt if it is moved and it rains. That way, it no longer has any value. I am concerned that even in this day and age, salted Christians are not being trampled on by the people of the world, losing their taste like rock salt that has been rained on. Are you not a poor Christian who has lost his taste and is ridiculed by the world?
Even now, we must repent and restore the taste of salt. When we restore the taste of salt, the world will begin to change quietly, but surely, anew.
Prayer: Lord, help me not to be a helpless Christian who is trampled on by the world, but to restore the mission of salt and become a true disciple of Jesus who changes the world. I pray in Jesus name. Amen.
