<Text> Numbers 1:1-54

<Hymns> Chapter 351. Those who believe are your soldiers

Numbers begins with God's command to Moses to take a census of Israel at the Tent of Meeting in the wilderness on the second year and one month after Israel came out of Egypt. 0 But God set up their camp in the middle of the wilderness and told them to take a census. There was a very obvious reason.

If Genesis is a book of 'beginning', then Exodus is a book of 'redemption', Leviticus is a book of 'sacrifices', and Numbers is a book of 'war'. Therefore, from the beginning of Numbers, God commanded the census in order to prepare them for the many wars to come. Because at that time Israel was within the borders of the enemy, and therefore it was necessary to be fully prepared to fight them.

1. What, then, is the principle of the census that Israel prepared for war?

First, there was a command from God, the commander of the war, and it had to be followed (1-3).

When an army is fighting an enemy, you can't win by just fighting recklessly. You must obey the orders of a commander who knows war experience and tactics. Without a commander, if all the soldiers fight according to their own will and their own will, then the battle is sure to be lost. God was Israel's supreme commander.

So God gave a command to Israel through Moses. More than 150 times in Numbers alone, God spoke to Moses and gave instructions to share with his people.

2. Organizationalization

Second, they systematized the organization (4-46).

War is, in a way, an organizational fight. No matter how good and strong the individual is, if the organization does not support it, the war cannot be won. On the other hand, even if the individual is weak and weak, with the support of a strong organization, any war can be won. This is because the organization acts as a string that binds all the soldiers together with one heart and one will.

So God, the great tactician, commanded Moses to organize the organization.

3. The importance of sacrifice

Third, the tribe of Levi was excluded from the count so that sacrifices were not taken lightly during warfare (47-54).

In my opinion, it is best to recruit one more soldier to fight during a war. But God's way was different from man's. God wanted Israel to depend more on God than on the number of their armies. He wanted them to realize that Israel's war did not depend on the number or smallness of the army, but on the weight of their faith in God. So, God excluded the tribe of Levi, which was established for the purpose of sacrificial duty, from the count so that sacrifices could be continued even during the war.

Therefore, it is important to go out in front and fight with a gun and sword, but the right purpose and principle are important. It is more important to raise your hands in prayer from behind. Who is the war for? What is the war for? Sacrifice, as a work that gives right goals and values, was the greatest force that united the people of Israel and became the most important weapon.

Therefore, even in our lives, if we know worship and prayer as the most important tactics and values when we fight in spiritual battle, we will become saints who always win spiritual battles if we live our lives with the highest priority.

<Prayer>

God the Father

As we live in this world, we are fighting a spiritual battle every day, so please help us to become your soldiers who win this battle. Put on the full armor of the Word and arm yourself with prayer, so that we can win daily in spiritual battles and become Your warriors who give glory to God the Captain. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen
