Subject: Only by being filled with the Holy Spirit?...!
Text: Joel 2:28-32, Ephesians 5:15-21
In a time when idolatry was rampant, a son is born into a pious family untouched by the world. His parents gave him the name Joel. Its meaning is 'Jehovah is God' in a confessional meaning. His father's name was Bethuel, which means 'house of God'. There is no data other than the name of the father and son. “The word of the Lord to Joel the son of Bethuel” (Joel 1:1). The content of the Word is the judgment symbolized by the locust plague and salvation through the pouring out of the Holy Spirit. Both judgment and salvation were thorough. “What the locusts left, the locusts ate, and the locusts ate what the locusts left, and the locusts ate what the locusts left” (Joel 1:4). “Then the LORD will be zealous for his land, and will have compassion on his people... and you will be satisfied with this” (Joel 2:18,19).
Because of the great deeds of Jehovah, natural disasters as well as foreign armies symbolized by locusts flee (Joel 2:20,21). The history of restoration that begins after the end of the history of judgment will be as clear as nature. ‘Early rain’ and ‘late rain’ will be the same as before (Joel 2:22,23). All things come to life and bear fruit, and storehouses are filled. “The courts will be full of wheat, and the poisons will overflow with new wine and oil” (Joel 2:24). Lost joy is restored, and hymns are revived. The God of Israel will be glorified, and the chosen people of Israel will be washed away from shame (Joel 2:25-27). And today's Old Testament text continues. “After that I will pour out my Spirit on all people…and whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved…and some of the remnant will be called by the Lord” (Joel 2:28-32). .
The fulfillment of this prophecy is the Pentecost of the Holy Spirit in Mark's upper room (Acts 2:1-4). This is the baptism of the Holy Spirit that John the Baptist spoke of (Matthew 3:11). These are the words of the resurrected Jesus before His ascension to heaven (Luke 24:49). Today's New Testament text (Ephesians 5:15-21) is a necessary word for the lives of believers who are called to be members of the church (Ephesians 4:1-3). We need the help of the Holy Spirit to live a life worthy of our calling. The worse the world gets, the more we need that help. The same is true of Christian family life. The same is true in the life of a couple (Ephesians 5:22-33), the life of parents and children (Ephesians 6:1-4), and the life of work (Ephesians 6:5-9). We can practice it only based on today's New Testament text. You must follow the word ‘only’ that is repeated three times. 1) Don't miss the opportunity like a wise person. 2) Understand what the will of the Lord is. 3) You will be filled with the Holy Spirit, etc.
If I had to choose one of ‘only them’, it would be ‘filled with the Holy Spirit alone’. There is a reason that the title of the sermon was [Only filled with the Holy Spirit?...!]. There is a life that can be experienced by being filled with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:19-21). This is because the following words (Ephesians 5:22-6:9) become the gospel, not the law. It is because they taste salvation through the help of the Holy Spirit. It is the joy and emotion of ‘Oh, I really do too!’. The life of the wise is made possible in the filling of the Holy Spirit. It becomes possible to practice life without missing an opportunity. In the fullness of the Holy Spirit, we realize what the will of the Lord is. With this joy and emotion, our souls dance. Because a Christian life is realized. So [?] becomes [!]. You nod your head and say, 'Well, that's it!' Hallelujah, Amen.
