Title Ornan's Threshing Floor (1 Chronicles 21:18-30)

Contents The plague that spread throughout Israel was not caused by David's sin, and that sin was clearly a “great sin”. However, the sin was the product of David's pride and vanity, who trusted in his own power instead of God, and was ungrateful for forgetting the saving grace that God had bestowed upon him in the past, and therefore it caused the terrible wrath of God. But David realized his sin and asked God's forgiveness, and God told him to choose the punishment for his sin, so David chose pestilence. The plague was so terrifying that it killed 70,000 people in just nine hours. David looked to the angel who carried out the calamity. He interceded for the people.

1. David follows the instructions of the Lord's messenger The correct remedy for most of the problems that people face, especially those related to God, is to follow the Lord's instructions. No other way, no other prescription. David followed the instructions given through the seer as to how to completely stop God's plagues upon Israel because of his own unbelief. No matter what problems we saints face, our help lies in turning to Him because He alone has the perfect answer. The prescription given by the angel of the Lord was that David had to build an altar and offer burnt offerings to God in order to stop this terrible plague.

(1) David acknowledged his sins and confessed them.

(2) David asked for God's great mercy.

(3) This sacrifice was a type of sacrifice to Christ. The angel made a generous offer. The altar was to be erected in a designated place, which was Ornan's property. David explained the situation to Ornan, and Ornan offered to provide not only the property but also everything necessary for the sacrifice free of charge. 1) Ornan's proposal went beyond David's request. 2) This proposal was immediate with a godly decision. 3) This suggestion led to prayer.

2. Ornan's threshing floor (vv. 18-21)

(1) It is a place that God has commanded. “The angel of the LORD commanded Gad, and said to David, Go up and build an altar to the LORD at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

(2) It is the place God prepared for the forgiveness of sins. God's command to David to climb "the threshing floor of Ornan" was not a random command to enjoy and enjoy his rights as a Creator. Ornan's altar was pleasing to God by obeying God's Word, so it could have avoided God's curse on mankind.

(3) It is a place of transportation. The ultimate purpose of God's sinful David ascending to the “threshing floor of Ornan” was to break down the wall of sin between God and David and restore the close relationship as before. In other words, God had David go up here, build an altar, and offer sacrifices to relieve God's own wrath and forgive David's sins, and to restore the close relationship as before.

(4) It was Ornan's workplace. Ornan was faithful to his life despite the angel of the Lord going around and killing many people, and he went out to the threshing floor where he was working to thresh wheat. God, who called Peter, who was fishing in the Sea of Galilee (Luke 5:1-11) and Moses, who was shepherding at the foot of Mount Horeb (Exodus 3:1-12), called those who were faithful in his work in many cases and called them to their workplace. made God's work place.

3. The Price of Faith and Self-Sacrifice

(1) David's request David asked Ornan to give him the place where he was threshing (verse 22). It was a difficult request from Ornan's point of view. It's not the land you're playing, it's the threshing floor. It is a working land. David's request was, "I will build an altar here, and the plague will cease among the people." A large number of people could be saved only when the place where the Ornan threshing floor worked was turned into a place to build an altar to God. David told Ornan this command from God.

(2) Ornan's answer in verse 23, "Ornan said to David, Take the king, and do as my lord the king pleases... I give all the wheat for a grain offering.” Ornan fully agreed with the purpose and was willing to participate in it, so he contributed not only the threshing floor but also everything that was there: cattle, threshing machines, and wheat. He surrendered his personal ownership to the greater ownership of God and his dying neighbors.

(3) David offered sacrifices at a reasonable price When he offered sacrifices to God on the threshing floor of Ornan, David paid the necessary sacrifices and offered them. Whether it is an offering to God or a relief for the poor, the value of anything that is not paid is diminished by that much. King David gave Ornan 600 shekels of gold for the price of the wand (verse 25), and the 50 shekels of silver mentioned in 2 Samuel 24:24 were the price of the threshing floor alone. The 600 gold shekels in the text were the price of the entire land and the price for the ceremonies performed there. Ornan was willing to give everything to David, but God rewarded Ornan more and made him build an altar.

4. Results

(1) God was satisfied. Verse 26, “The Lord answered by sending fire from heaven upon the altar of burnt offering.” Burnt offerings for sin were accepted. The fire that came down from heaven and consumed all the sacrifices was God's token of peace. God gladly accepted and responded to sacrifices and devotions of sincerity and sincerity.

(2) The sword that God commanded to the lion is removed. God's peace is possible only in the way He has ordained. When David followed God's instructions, the disaster stopped and peace was restored. The fever has ended. There is a way to escape the wrath of God, and a way to obtain a token of His love. This is a solid foreshadowing of reconciliation with God through Christ and acceptance by him.
