Title Our Inheritance: Redemption first

Our Legacy: Salvation is the First Colossians 1:12-14

People write wills before they die. This is how people know whose property belongs to the dead. It is no wonder that most parents pass on their wealth to their children. The expression “testament” here has the same meaning as the “word” written in the Bible. Through the Bible, we know what we inherit to the children of God through the death of Jesus Christ. If you are born again as believers in Christ, you will inherit great fortune, and that fortune will be revealed to us through the Bible. If you've inherited a great inheritance, you've found what's legally yours. But many believers do not claim what is rightfully theirs in Christ. As a believer in Christ, I want to fight to know what is rightly ours. In doing so, we will be able to accomplish what God has put us to do.

Colossians 1:12-14 May we give thanks to the Father, who has made us worthy to receive part of the inheritance of the saints in the light. 13 He delivered us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of our sins.

Paul describes two kingdoms: the kingdom of darkness/the kingdom of light. Our legacy is the Kingdom of Light. But to receive that inheritance, you will have to come out of the land of darkness and enter the kingdom of Jesus Christ. An important shift in our lives, one that comes out of the land of darkness and into the realm of light, should be preceded. As far as I know, there are still many believers who have not made this move even in the church. Admittedly, they go to church and even talk about God's grace, but they haven't had a supernatural transition to the kingdom of light, nor have they ever actually had that moment of being born again. Sadly, they only take up places in worship and never believe or experience the ever-changing power of God in your own life or in the lives of others. Jesus said that you must be born again to enter the kingdom of God. If you have not experienced a supernatural change through the power of the Holy Spirit, you are far from God's will.

Entering the kingdom of light ultimately comes through salvation. It is salvation through Jesus' death on the cross. Through his salvation we can receive the remission of our sins. When we are saved, Satan can no longer claim any influence on us: we can be freed from the power of Satan that has had upon us and our lives, freed from his shadow and entered into our heritage, the Kingdom of Light. there will be

Our Situation in the Land of Darkness

People don't know their spiritual state when they're in the dark: they need light to shine in the dark to see who they really are. That light is the word of God. What is God's word about our situation before Jesus came to us and saved us?

Ephesians 2:1-2 He made you, who were dead in trespasses and sins, alive. 2 In those days you walked in them, after the course of this world, and after the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now works in the sons of disobedience.

When people are in the land of darkness, they are under the control of the power of the air, that is, the spiritual power called the lord of the powers of the world. And he is recognized as the spirit that works in the children of disobedience. In other words, disobedience to God automatically places us under Satan's sphere of influence. This is the situation we are in.

Before Ephesians 2:3, in which we all lived in the lusts of our flesh, doing the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like others.

What God wants is to deliver us from Satan's dark land and his bonds with him and lead us to our heritage in the kingdom of light.

Acts 26:17-8 17 I have saved you from Israel and from the Gentiles, and I have sent you to them.

18 I will open their eyes to turn from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive the forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by believing in me

According to God's Word, Satan has power, and that power is also true: it is not a fantasy from imagination or theology. Satan is a powerful being, and he has dominion over those who distance themselves from God. Our escape from Satan was accomplished by Jesus dying on the cross for us to save us.

Our Inheritance: Redemption first Col 1:12-14

Before people die they write a ‘Last Will and Testament’. This lets people know who receives the belongings of the deceased. It is natural for most parents to leave everything they own to their children. The word ‘testament’ here is the same word that is used for the Old and New Testament. Our Bibles let us know what belongs to the children of God through the death of Christ. If you are a born-again believer in Christ, you are an heir to a great fortune and this fortune is revealed to us in the Bible. If you’ve inherited a great fortune, naturally you would want to find out what’s legally yours. However, many Christians fail to claim what is rightfully theirs in Christ. As believers in Christ I hope we learn to fight for what is legally ours so we can accomplish what God has called us to do.

Col 1:12-14 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. 13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Paul pictures 2 kingdoms: darkness/light. Our inheritance is the kingdom of light but in order to receive we have to be delivered from the domain of darkness to enter into the kingdom of Jesus Christ. There has to be a transition in our lives where at one point we moved from the dominion of darkness and entered into the kingdom of light. I believe there are many people in the church who haven’t made this transition. Sure they go to church and will even say ‘God bless you.’ but there hasn’t been any supernatural transition into the kingdom of light; there hasn’t been a time where they actually became ‘born again’. It is sad to just be an ‘attender’ at church services and never believe in or experience the transforming power of God in you life or in the lives of others. Jesus says, ‘you must be born again to enter the Kingdom of God. If you have never had a supernatural transformation through the power of the Holy Spirit, you are outside of God’s will.

Entrance into the kingdom of light ultimately comes through redemption, through the death of Jesus on the cross. Through his redemption we can receive forgiveness of sins. Once we receive this, Satan has no more legal claim over us; we’re delivered from Satan’s power over us and over our lives; we are set free from his domain and made capable to enter into our inheritance in the kingdom of light

Our condition in the domain of darkness

When people are in the dark they cannot see their spiritual condition; they need a light to come into the darkness to reveal their true condition and that light is provided by the word of God. What the word of God says about our condition before Christ came to us and redeemed us

Eph 2:1-3 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.

When people are in the kingdom of darkness they are under the dominion of a spiritual power called the prince of the power of the air and he’s defined as the spirit who works in the sons of disobedience. In other words, our disobedience to God automatically exposes us to the influence and domination of Satan.

This was the universal condition of all of us Eph 2:3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath.

God’s purpose through the gospel is to deliver us from that bondage of darkness and of satan and to bring us to our inheritance in the kingdom of light

Acts 26: 17-18 I will rescue you from your own people and from the Gentiles. I am sending you to them 18 to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place (inheritance) among those who are sanctified by faith in me.'

God’s word tells us that Satan has power and the power of darkness is real; not imagination or theological fantasy. Satan is a real being with real power who really dominates those who are alienated from God.

Deliverance from the power of Satan comes through redemption which has been provided for us by the death of Jesus on the cross on our behalf.

What does redemption mean? It means to buy back or to ransom. Say somebody decides to kidnap a rich man’s son. The son will not be returned to his father unless he pays a large sum of money. The rich father decides to pay the kidnapper and the son is returned. The wealthy man ‘redeemed’ his son from the kidnappers. Jesus paid the price to redeem us from the kingdom of satan. This is a picture of what happened at the cross. Satan has deceived humanity into belonging to him and are enslaved to their sin in his slave market.

Rom 7:14 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin.

We are all slaves to satan by nature but when Jesus came to earth he walked into Satan’s slave market, saw us there for sale and paid the price to buy us back by his precious blood

Eph 1:7In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace

It was the precious blood that Jesus shed on our behalf that paid the price of our redemption, delivered us from Satan's slave market, and from the kingdom of darkness- obtained for us the forgiveness of sins and qualified us to enter the inheritance of the saints in light.

The question for you is, ‘Have you gone personally to Jesus and asked him to forgive your sins?’

John 6:37 whoever comes to me I will never drive away
